
India has emerged as the fifth-largest filer of generative AI patents globally, publishing 929 patents in 2024 and 2025 alone. According to the latest report by the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), this represents nearly 70% of India's total AI patent output over the entire previous decade (2014-2023). The surge demonstrates how companies are transitioning from experimental AI development to large-scale commercial deployment of generative AI technologies, with India achieving a 64% compound annual growth rate (CAGR) between 2024 and 2025.
China dominated the global rankings with 43,383 AI patent filings in 2024 and 2025, surpassing its total output of 38,210 patents over the previous decade. As reported by WIPO, China now accounts for over 70% of all GenAI patents published worldwide, illustrating its innovation leadership in artificial intelligence technologies. The United States follows with a 10% share of global GenAI patents over the past two years, while Japan secured third place with a 6.5% share and South Korea rounded out the top five with a 3.7% share. India ranks sixth globally with a 2% share, while Germany holds the sixth position and the United Kingdom is in eighth place, with countries like Germany, the UK, Canada, and Switzerland clearly narrowing the gap with countries like India as they accelerate their patenting activities.
The patent filing data reveals significant growth across major economies, with Japan posting a staggering 230% CAGR in patent filings. According to WIPO, this surge was largely driven by SoftBank, which emerged as the single largest GenAI patent holder in 2025 with over 3,000 published patent families. The United States demonstrated particularly strong growth with filings expanding at a 92% CAGR, reflecting how fast commercial enterprise is driving patenting activity in that country.
Large language models (LLMs) have now overtaken generative adversarial networks (GANs) as the largest GenAI model category by patent volume. As reported by WIPO, between 2014 and 2025, 20,900 patent families were published in the LLM category compared to 18,800 in the GAN category. In 2025, LLM patents were five times higher than those for GANs. These LLM patents span multiple modalities including text, code, video, voice, music, and images, indicating the broad scope of AI innovation across various applications.
