Sumit Jain, the chief executive officer of Bengaluru-based Unacademy's test-preparation business, is stepping down from his full-time operating role, according to reports from Moneycontrol. As per the report, Jain's last day of employment in a full-time operational capacity will be June 30. Post this transition, he will continue with the company in an advisory role from July 1, as confirmed in an internal memo from Unacademy co-founder and CEO Gaurav Munjal. According to Munjal's memo, 'Sumit has been a strong support system and a Co-Founder for Unacademy since 2020. And I have personally known him since 2013 when CommonFloor acquired my first company Flatchat. And more importantly, he has been a dear friend'.
According to an internal memo from Unacademy co-founder and CEO Gaurav Munjal, Jain has built two strong pillars for the company. Graphy emerged as a growing, profitable business for Unacademy, with Jain's acquisition of Spayee and subsequent merging with Graphy followed by scaling being described as 'really needle-moving for Unacademy Group'. Additionally, Jain helped make the offline business profitable through focus on unit economics and eventually converting them to franchisees. Munjal credited Jain with building 'two strong pillars for Unacademy', highlighting his significant impact on the company's diversified business portfolio. As reported by ETBrandEquity, Jain expressed pride in his tenure, stating 'What a ride the last six years have been — something I would never trade for anything else. Amazing discussions, learning, and memories along the way. Proud to be a co-founder of a company that has been the first in doing so many things and set a benchmark for excellence'.
In 2020, Jain joined Unacademy after the firm bought his startup, OpenTalk. Before that, he served as CEO and co-founder of CommonFloor, a real estate site that Quikr later purchased. Later in September 2025, Unacademy had elevated Jain to CEO of its test-preparation business as part of a broader restructuring aimed at sharpening focus on the company's core competitive exam segment. As reported by ETBrandEquity, Jain joined Unacademy as a co-founder in 2020 and played a key role in building Graphy, expanding the company's offline business, and improving profitability. He has also invested in several startups, bringing diverse experience to the edtech company. As reported by Moneycontrol, Munjal noted that he has personally known Jain since 2013, when CommonFloor acquired his first company, Flatchat.
This leadership transition comes before the reported merger of Unacademy with Ronnie Screwvala-led UpGrad. According to reports, UpGrad filed a merger application with the Competition Commission of India (CCI) for its proposed acquisition of Unacademy. The proposed transaction is valued at $300-400 million and is expected to strengthen UpGrad's presence in the online test-preparation segment, including categories such as UPSC, JEE, NEET, and GATE. Talks between the two companies had been on and off for several months, with discussions briefly stalling earlier this year over valuation differences before negotiations resumed and the companies moved toward signing a term sheet. The merger is expected to close by the end of June, pending regulatory approvals.
