
Bengaluru-based deep-tech startup QOSMIC has successfully raised $3.33 million in a seed funding round to advance its laser-based communication systems for space applications. The round was co-led by Accel and Prosus, with participation from South Park Commons, ARTPARK, and angel investor Manish Jain. According to reports from Business Standard, the company announced this development on Wednesday, marking a significant milestone in the emerging space infrastructure sector.
Founded in 2025, QOSMIC is developing laser-based communication systems designed to enable satellites to transmit significantly larger volumes of data than conventional radio-frequency systems. As reported by Business Standard, the company addresses a critical market gap where modern spacecraft generate terabytes per day but still rely on radio-frequency links constrained by spectrum, congestion, and short transmission windows. CEO and co-founder Shreyaans Jain explained that "Around 50-60% of satellite data never reaches the end user because the bandwidth simply doesn't exist." He emphasized that if data cannot come back to Earth, it has no value, highlighting the urgent need for optical communication solutions.
According to Business Standard, Jain emphasized that the next decade of the space economy will be defined by data, with satellites becoming exponentially more capable while ground infrastructure has not kept pace. Jain stated that optical communications will become as fundamental to space infrastructure as fibre optics became to the internet, enabling the company to accelerate the transition and build the connectivity layer for next-generation space applications. The funding will accelerate QOSMIC's work to build the data layer of the space economy - the network that carries information between satellites, orbital data centres, and the ground network. The capital will specifically scale manufacturing, integration, and testing capabilities, plus expand engineering teams.
