Yousuf Imran, a former account executive at Google, resigned from his position at the company, leaving behind a salary of $1 million or ₹9.4 crore to create his own AI startup. According to a Business Insider essay, the 41-year-old executive stated that he made the decision based on his FOMO (fear of missing out) regarding the AI boom as well as his uncertainty with job security at Google. Imran's base salary was approximately $170,000 (₹1.6 crore) while commissions accounted for most of his income, taking his annual W-2 earnings to nearly $986,000 (₹9.3 crore). The executive decided to leave his job after six years at the tech giant to found his startup Mangosteen Studio in April.
Mangosteen Studio describes itself as an 'AI Product Lab' that builds AI tools for account executives in sales firms to help them consolidate their workflows. As reported, the company's website states: "We believe the best AI tools should make salespeople feel more capable and more in control, not more dependent on clunky systems." Imran founded the startup to use AI to "build the tools he wish he had" when he spent two decades "carrying" for notable firms. The startup was launched by a former Google employee who quit his high-paying job to pursue opportunities in the AI sector, with some tech employees leaving high-paying jobs for AI startups citing opportunities and FOMO.
According to reports, Imran set aside $200,000 to fund his company for two years along with an additional $150,000 to pay for his mortgage and personal expenses. The startup founder would experiment with Large Language Models such as Claude, Gemini and ChatGPT to "vibe code" applications and side projects, despite not having a software development background. Imran stated that he was satisfied with his job at Google but experienced FOMO on learning about Anthropic and ChatGPT's equity packages, which he described as "being in a different universe." He said his exit from Google was carefully planned and he wants to grow the company without outside funding for as long as possible so he keeps ownership and focus on building the business.
