Kevin Naughton Jr, a New York-based tech professional, recently left his position at Google after building sufficient savings to pursue entrepreneurship. According to reports from NDTV Profit, Naughton Jr was earning nearly $350,000 (around ₹3.3 crore) annually at the tech giant. He described Google as one of the best nine-to-five jobs he could have asked for, but realized the role did not align with his long-term career goals. Speaking to Jugal Bhatt, Naughton Jr revealed that the decision was made almost from the beginning, stating "It was kind of on the first day, but in all seriousness, I just kind of knew from the first day, I always knew I wanted to work for myself."
A major turning point came in 2022, when Naughton Jr lost his father. As reported by NDTV Profit, this personal loss prompted him to reassess his priorities and focus more seriously on pursuing work that made him happy. Speaking to Jugal Bhatt, he explained that the loss served as a wake-up call, emphasizing the importance of doing what makes one happy every day and not settling for a job that doesn't align with personal values. "In 2022, I lost my dad. So that was like a really big, you know, just wake-up call. You have to do what you want. You have to be happy every day," he said. The loss made him realize that even though Google offered an exceptional work environment and career, it did not align with what he wanted to do every day.
Naughton Jr approached the decision with careful financial planning, spending years to build up enough savings for several years of financial runway. According to NDTV Profit, he followed a conservative approach to financial risks, with a friend advising that if he didn't need to work for three years and wasn't committed to working for himself after the third year, any money saved after that period would be wasted. Despite describing himself as a relatively conservative person when it comes to taking risks, he said he had spent years building up enough savings to give himself financial breathing room. A conversation with one of his closest friends eventually gave him the final push, with his friend telling him that if he had enough savings to avoid working for three years, he should use that time to seriously pursue working for himself.
The financial cushion provided by his years of savings has enabled Naughton Jr to pursue his entrepreneurial ambitions without immediate financial pressure. As reported by NDTV Profit, his decision to leave Google has attracted significant attention online, particularly because he chose to walk away from a salary that many would find difficult to give up. His story has sparked discussion online, with several users sharing their reactions and questioning whether he ever regretted giving up the security of a traditional nine-to-five job. One user asked, "Wondering did you ever feel regret the decision? Did you ever miss the 9-5 life?" while another wrote, "The streets dont know, this was the original joga bonito! Congratulations on all your success Kev!" His journey demonstrates how strategic financial planning can provide the foundation for pursuing career independence, even when leaving behind a lucrative corporate position.
