Specialty coffee chain Blue Tokai, one of Starbucks Corp.'s strongest competitors in India, has announced plans to more than triple its store network over the next four years. According to reports from Business Standard, parent company Muhavra Enterprises Pvt. currently operates 240 outlets across the country and aims to expand to 800 stores by fiscal year 2030. Co-founder and CEO Matt Chitharanjan revealed that the company plans to add approximately 120 stores in the current financial year to deepen presence in major metros while expanding into newer cities such as Ahmedabad and Lucknow. The expansion comes as part of Blue Tokai's efforts to capitalize on India's growing coffee culture and consumer demand for premium coffee experiences, positioning itself as a major competitor to established players including Starbucks, Café Coffee Day, Barista, and Third Wave Coffee.
The expansion strategy comes as India's café market shows significant growth potential. As reported by Business Standard, research firm IMARC Group projects the nation's café market — currently valued at $425 million in 2025 — to grow 11.14% annually to $1.15 billion by 2034. Blue Tokai expects its revenue to grow more than 50% to ₹800 crore ($93.9 million) this financial year, following a near sevenfold surge over the past four years. Despite facing competition from established players, Chitharanjan believes there is significant growth potential in India's café market. According to Business Standard, he stated that "India is still fairly under-penetrated in terms of branded cafés" and emphasized that "while it may seem from the outside that there's a lot of competition, there's still tons and tons of white space." The company's strategy focuses on building a dense store network to lower supply-chain and staffing costs, leveraging the habitual nature of coffee consumption among customers who appreciate quality beverages.
The expansion comes as Blue Tokai faces intensifying competition from established players in India's premium coffee segment. Starbucks, which operates in India through a joint venture with Tata Consumer Products Ltd., plans to add up to 100 stores every year to its current network of over 500 outlets. According to Business Standard, Chitharanjan believes the competitive landscape presents opportunities rather than challenges, stating that "while it may seem from the outside that there's a lot of competition, there's still tons and tons of white space." The growth reflects expanding demand for premium coffee among India's affluent consumers, driven by wider availability through digital channels and quick-service chains. The café business faces risks including supply-chain disruption, spike in coffee prices, and high employee and real estate expenses, but Chitharanjan expects the company to turn profitable by March 2028.
The company is making its international debut with its first overseas store opening in Dubai next week, marking a significant step in its global expansion strategy. Blue Tokai is backed by investors including Verlinvest and expects to raise ₹150 crore in the next few years before funding growth ambitions internally. The company is targeting an initial public offering within the next five to seven years to provide an exit route to early investors. According to Business Standard, Chitharanjan indicated the company will likely further raise ₹1.5 billion in the next few years before it can fund its growth ambitions internally. The chain will open its first international store in Dubai next week, positioning it as a major competitor to established international coffee chains in the Indian market.
Despite the competitive landscape, Chitharanjan believes Blue Tokai has significant advantages in India's café market. According to Business Standard, he emphasized that "India is still fairly under-penetrated in terms of branded cafés" and highlighted the company's focus on quality beverages. "The advantage of coffee is that it's a very habitual thing," Chitharanjan explained, noting that "one of the reasons that people come to us is because they like the quality of the core beverage that we have, and that's kind of what they stick to." The company's strategy focuses on building a dense store network to lower supply-chain and staffing costs, with Chitharanjan stating that "the habitual nature of coffee consumption among customers who appreciate quality beverages" provides a sustainable competitive advantage. With coffee culture booming across India, Blue Tokai is expanding into both familiar and fresh markets to capitalize on the rising demand for premium coffee offerings.
