Uttar Pradesh's religious tourism boom is driving significant growth in the state's real estate sector. According to official data reported by Business Standard, investment in the formal real estate sector in the state's top faith tourism destinations increased by 66% from ₹982 crore in H1CY25 to ₹1,631 crore in H1CY26. This substantial increase reflects the growing demand for quality housing and commercial properties in religious tourism hubs across the state.
The demand for residential properties has shown remarkable expansion alongside commercial developments. As reported by Business Standard, the number of housing units in Ayodhya, Mathura, Varanasi, Prayagraj and Mirzapur realty projects jumped from 2,481 units in H1CY25 to 3,867 units in H1CY26. This represents a 55% increase in housing units over the corresponding period, indicating strong market confidence in the religious tourism sector's long-term prospects.
Varanasi emerged as the standout performer in real estate investment growth, with the city logging the biggest leap in investment activity. According to Business Standard, Varanasi's real estate investment surged from ₹205 crore across four projects in H1CY25 to ₹944 crore across six projects in H1CY26. This represents a 353% increase in investment value, highlighting the city's strategic importance as a religious tourism destination following the redevelopment of Kashi Vishwanath Dham.
The state's religious tourism sector has experienced unprecedented growth, with domestic and international tourist inflow more than doubling from 640 million in 2024 to 1.56 billion in 2025. As reported by Business Standard, Prayagraj topped the tourist chart with more than 691 million tourists in 2025, followed by Ayodhya with 299 million visitors, Varanasi with 173 million, Mathura with 102 million, and Chitrakoot with 36 million. This surge in tourism has created substantial demand for quality housing and commercial real estate infrastructure.
The Uttar Pradesh government is actively facilitating this growth through proactive support for modern housing projects, including greenfield townships. According to a senior UP official quoted by Business Standard, the rapid development of religious places is creating positive momentum that encourages people to consider settling in these towns, thereby driving growth in the formal real estate sector. The combination of religious tourism infrastructure development and government support is positioning UP as a key destination for real estate investment in India's religious tourism sector.
