Digital zero-balance accounts have become the default entry point into banking for India's digitally active population, serving students, professionals, and homemakers. According to reports from Essential Business Intelligence, these accounts are offered by three primary types of banks: universal banks, small finance banks, and payments banks, each with varying features and services. While all accounts appear similar in onboarding processes and apps, the fundamental differences lie in their service capabilities and banking relationships.
At a balance of ₹1.5 lakh, the accounts produce different outcomes based on their interest structures. As reported by Essential Business Intelligence, Quantum+ offers the highest potential returns with slab-based interest rates: ₹0-₹3 lakh at 2.5%, ₹3-₹25 lakh at 7%, potentially earning ₹7,500 annually for the full amount. Kotak 811 provides a flat 2.5% rate earning ₹3,750 annually on the base account. Slice offers a flat 5.25% rate (current repo rate) earning ₹7,875 annually. Airtel Payments Bank ranges from 1.5%-6.5% with the first ₹1 lakh earning ₹4,750 annually. Jio Payments Bank earns ₹2,500 annually at current slab rates. Notably, Quantum+ stands out by crediting interest monthly rather than quarterly, allowing faster compounding of returns.
According to Essential Business Intelligence, Quantum+ offers genuine zero-balance terms with no minimum balance requirement and no maintenance fees. Kotak 811 provides zero balance on Limited KYC, Lite, and Full KYC variants, while the ₹10,000 AMB requirement applies to the Edge variant. Slice also offers unconditional zero balance terms. Airtel Payments Bank maintains zero balance but is not designed to hold large sums per RBI guidelines. Jio Payments Bank features zero balance up to a threshold, with balances above automatically swept into linked partner accounts.
As reported by Essential Business Intelligence, Quantum+ provides a free first virtual card with physical card costing ₹299-399 annually, plus a Visa Platinum card on the Super Account. Kotak 811 offers a free virtual card with physical card at additional cost. Slice provides free virtual card with physical card at charges. Airtel Payments Bank offers free virtual card with physical card at ₹299-349 annually. Jio Payments Bank includes a Platinum debit card with the account. Quantum+ offers unlimited free ATM withdrawals at IDFC FIRST Bank ATMs, while Kotak 811 provides ₹25,000 daily with free transactions up to certain limits. Airtel Payments Bank and Jio Payments Bank have limited free transaction caps with charges beyond the free quota.
According to Essential Business Intelligence, all five accounts can be opened completely digitally without branch visits. Quantum+ opens entirely within the IDFC FIRST Bank app with Video KYC completing verification in minutes. Kotak 811 promises similar quick opening using video KYC. Slice markets instant account opening with zero paperwork. Airtel Payments Bank opens through the Airtel Thanks app using Aadhaar e-KYC. Jio Payments Bank uses the MyJio/JioFinance app for digital opening. Beyond UPI services, Quantum+ and Kotak 811 offer full universal banking stacks including FDs, loans, investments, and insurance through the same login. Slice provides savings, FDs, UPI credit cards, and personal loans. Airtel Payments Bank and Jio Payments Bank offer limited services due to regulatory restrictions.
