According to Ace MF data analysis, small-cap mutual funds demonstrate significant performance variations across different time horizons. Bank of India Small Cap Fund currently leads the 3-month and 6-month rankings, while TRUSTMF Small Cap Fund tops the 1-year performance. The Nippon India Small Cap Fund maintains its position as the top performer over 3-year and 5-year durations, though it has dropped to 22nd position in the 3-month category. This inconsistent ranking pattern across timeframes highlights the volatile nature of small-cap fund performance.
Small-cap mutual funds have attracted substantial investor interest with recent inflows of ₹4,945 crore in May 2026 and ₹6,885 crore in April 2026, as reported by AMFI data. These figures represent some of the highest net inflows among equity schemes in the last three months. The category had previously witnessed inflows of ₹6,263.56 crore in March 2026, indicating sustained investor confidence in small-cap equity schemes despite their very-high risk profile.
The analysis reveals Bank of India Small Cap Fund as the overall top performer, ranking first in both 3-month and 6-month durations. TRUSTMF Small Cap Fund maintains its position as the second-best performer across multiple timeframes. Bandhan Small Cap Fund emerges as the top performer over 3-year and 5-year periods, while Invesco India Smallcap Fund consistently ranks among the top 3 across 3-year, 5-year, and 6-month durations. Notably, ITI Small Cap Fund ranks second over 3 years and consistently features among the top 10 performers across 3-month, 6-month, and 1-year categories.
Recent market entrants are showing promising early results despite their limited track records. Abakkus Small Cap Fund, launched on March 17, 2026, has delivered 15.81% returns since inception. Another newcomer, The Wealth Company Small Cap Fund, launched on March 25, 2026, has generated 10.79% returns since its debut. However, both schemes are excluded from the current performance rankings as they have not completed the required three-month minimum tracking period.
The data reveals that AUM size is not a reliable proxy for performance in this category, with established fund houses like HDFC, ICICI Prudential, SBI, Kotak, and Tata Small Cap Funds consistently ranking low across all five time horizons. As reported by the analysis, fund managers' stock selection strategies may not work consistently across different market cycles, explaining the wide variance in performance rankings. The study emphasizes that investors should consider multiple performance metrics and not rely solely on AUM size when evaluating small-cap fund performance.
