The Public Provident Fund (PPF) currently offers 7.1% interest rate for the July-September 2026 quarter, as reported by Mint. According to the investment calculator analysis, a ₹1,000 monthly investment can grow to approximately ₹3.25 lakh over a 15-year period, while a ₹5,000 monthly contribution can accumulate to ₹16.27 lakh. For higher investors, a ₹10,000 monthly investment can build a corpus of ₹32.55 lakh over the same timeframe. The current rate has remained unchanged since April 2020, following a gradual decline from the peak of 8.80% in 2011-12.
The PPF interest rate has experienced significant fluctuations since 2010, starting at 8.0% for FY 2010-11 and peaking at 8.80% from December 2011. According to India Post data, the rate remained at 8.70% for three consecutive years from 2013-14 to 2015-16, before dropping to 7.90% in July 2019. From April 2020, it has been maintained at the current 7.10% level. As per Mint analysis, an investor who deposited ₹1 lakh annually from April 2010 would have accumulated approximately ₹28.5 lakh by maturity in March 2025, demonstrating the power of compounding over the 15-year investment period.
PPF investments follow specific contribution guidelines with annual deposits ranging from ₹500 to ₹1.5 lakh permitted in a financial year, as detailed by Mint. The scheme allows 12 deposits annually and maintains an initial tenure of 15 years that can be extended in 5-year blocks. The current interest rate of 7.1% is subject to periodic government review, meaning rates may change for new investments over the 15-year investment horizon. Financial advisors recommend depositing PPF contributions before the 5th of each month to maximize interest accrual, as the rate is calculated on the lowest balance between the 5th and end of the month.
PPF investments offer significant tax advantages with eligible contributions qualifying for deductions under Section 80C, according to Mint reports. The scheme provides tax-free interest earnings under prevailing provisions, along with loan facilities and partial withdrawal options subject to scheme conditions. Investors can make monthly deposits of varying amounts, with the current ₹1,000 monthly investment showing substantial growth potential over the 15-year investment period. The tax-free status and government backing make it attractive for long-term wealth creation, particularly for investors seeking tax-efficient, government-backed returns.
