The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Transport Authority (MMRTA) has approved a fare revision effective September 1, 2026, making travel in Mumbai's black-and-yellow taxis and auto-rickshaws more expensive. According to reports from PTI, the minimum fare for a black-and-yellow taxi for the first 1.5 km will increase to ₹33 from ₹31, while the minimum auto-rickshaw fare will rise to ₹27 from ₹26. For longer journeys, the per-kilometre taxi fare has been revised to ₹21.90 from ₹20.66, and the auto-rickshaw fare will increase to ₹18.22 per km from ₹17.14.
While the immediate increase appears small at ₹2 more for taxi minimum fare and ₹1 more for auto minimum fare, the cumulative impact can be significant for regular commuters. As reported by PTI, assuming a commuter takes two minimum-fare auto rides every working day for 22 days a month, the fare increase of ₹1 per ride would add about ₹44 to the monthly commute bill. For two minimum-fare taxi rides a day over 22 working days, the ₹2 increase per ride would translate into an additional ₹88 a month. The actual increase will depend on the distance travelled and the number of rides taken by individual commuters.
The fare revision will affect passengers across the Mumbai Metropolitan Region, making daily commuting more expensive for residents and visitors. According to PTI reports, the MMRTA has approved these changes, which will take effect from September 1, 2026, impacting the cost of daily travel for passengers using black-and-yellow taxis and auto-rickshaws in the region.
