Digital Loan Against Mutual Funds (LAMF) now offer instant liquidity up to ₹10 crore with completely digital processes taking less than 15 minutes through integrated digital portals. According to recent developments, several private banks are entering this segment as younger customers increasingly prefer mutual funds to bank deposits. South Indian Bank began offering the facility in March, while Canara Bank, which introduced it last year, plans to scale up its business. The minimum loan amount is usually ₹25,000 for digital LAMF products, with banks offering up to ₹1 crore against equity funds and ₹5 crore against debt funds.
Interest rates depend on the borrower's profile, the lender's policy, and the underlying portfolio, generally starting at 9-10% annually and going beyond 15%. Unlike traditional EMI-based personal loans, LAMF operates on Simple Interest daily calculation where interest is charged only on the exact amount withdrawn for specific days of usage. For example, if approved for a ₹10 lakh limit but withdrawing only ₹2 lakhs for 15 days, interest is charged only on ₹2 lakhs for those 15 days. The loan tenure may range from three months to three years with zero foreclosure penalties, giving complete financial flexibility to borrowers.
Lenders usually prefer to lend against funds with lower volatility, with debt funds being better suited because they are less volatile and lenders offer higher LTV ratios. Among diversified equity schemes, large-cap equity mutual funds are more suitable due to their relative stability and liquidity. Borrowers should avoid pledging smallcap funds, sectoral, thematic, and commodity funds because they are volatile and qualify for lower LTV ratios. Market fluctuations can reduce pledged mutual fund unit values below required LTV levels, with borrowers having only seven days to regularise if LTV breach exceeds 50%. However, pledging your units keeps your wealth architecture entirely intact as your units remain in your name and continue to experience market growth.
LAMF allows investors to access liquidity while staying invested, preventing short-term financial needs from interrupting long-term wealth creation. The product operates as an overdraft facility where interest is strictly calculated on the exact amount withdrawn and only for specific days of usage. Unlike liquidating your portfolio for emergency funds which destroys your compounding curve and triggers capital gains tax, pledging your units keeps your wealth architecture entirely intact. Your pledged mutual fund units stay in your name and remain fully invested in the market, allowing you to capture ongoing capital appreciation and dividend payouts. The process eliminates the need for physical share certificates and branch visits, with 100% digital process available across Delhi NCR and PAN India.
Market volatility can spell trouble as equity-oriented mutual funds are vulnerable during volatile phases. If pledged asset values fall, borrowers may receive a margin call if the value drops below required maintenance limits. To resolve this, borrowers can pledge additional mutual fund units or make partial cash repayments to restore the required balance. Forced liquidation during market downturns locks in losses and disrupts long-term investment strategy. Borrowers should avoid using the full eligible loan amount and maintain a reasonable buffer, especially for equity-oriented funds. If total EMI commitments after LAMF exceed 50% of monthly income, the leverage may no longer be financially prudent.
