The Income Tax Department has announced 24x7 support operations from July 25, 2026, until July 31, 2026, providing crucial assistance to taxpayers filing at the last minute. According to the department's official notice, e-filing and Centralised Processing Centre (CPC) helplines will operate 24x7 from 8 am on July 25 until 11:59 pm on July 31, specifically targeting salaried taxpayers and individuals who typically delay their filings. The extended support comes as the first deadline for ITR-1 and ITR-2 approaches on July 31, 2026, with the department gradually increasing helpline availability from 8 am to 8 pm (July 13-17), 8 am to 10 pm (July 20-24), to the current 24x7 operations. Taxpayers can reach support through multiple helpline numbers including 1800 103 0025, 1800 419 0025, +91-80-46122000, and +91-80-61464700.
The Income Tax Department has implemented comprehensive measures to prevent portal glitches ahead of the July 31, 2026 deadline. According to Minister of State for Finance Pankaj Chaudhary's Parliamentary response, ITR filings between July 8 and July 14 more than doubled year-on-year on several days, touching 12.22 lakh returns on July 14, while daily logins rose to nearly 99 lakh. The e-filing ecosystem has been significantly upgraded with validated capability to process up to 1 crore ITRs per day, enhanced infrastructure capacity across compute, storage, memory, network and bandwidth, and rectified major issues from previous filing seasons. The government has established a robust monitoring and governance framework comprising 24×7 infrastructure monitoring, a dedicated WarRoom, and end-to-end operational readiness through collaboration with key stakeholders including UIDAI, banks, RBI, CDSL, NSDL, ICAI, and relevant internal verticals.
The Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) has implemented strict performance monitoring to ensure uninterrupted service delivery. As reported by Zee News, the managed service provider, Infosys, has faced contractual penalties over delays in delivering the upgraded e-filing project, lower service performance, application outages during peak filing periods and extensions of ITR deadlines attributable to the service provider. The IEC 2.0 MSPs are evaluated based on their Service Levels Score, which includes operational lapses and significant downtime, measured quarterly with penalties for lower performance for 12 quarters. The MSP faces penalties for application outages during peak periods and is liable for penalties if ITR filing due dates get extended due to service provider reasons. The government has disclosed that Infosys was supposed to launch the IEC 2.0 project in July 2020 but failed to meet the deadline, resulting in liquidated damages.
The ITR filing deadline for FY 2025-26 (AY 2026-27) is not a single date - it depends entirely on your income profile, audit status, and taxpayer category. Most salaried individuals and pensioners filing ITR-1 or ITR-2 must file by 31 July 2026, while professionals and small business owners filing ITR-3 or ITR-4 without audit requirements get an extra month until 31 August 2026. Businesses under statutory audit must file by 31 October 2026, and those with international or specified domestic transactions have until 30 November 2026. As of 21 July 2026, no official extension has been notified for the 31 July 2026 due date, unlike some previous years when forms were delayed. The Income Tax Department has signalled it does not expect to repeat prior extensions driven by delayed form releases.
As reported by Zee News, the last week of July typically sees a rush on the income tax portal as many taxpayers delay their filings in anticipation of an extension. However, tax experts warn that deadline extensions are usually announced only in special situations such as technical issues on the income tax e-filing portal or administrative difficulties affecting a large number of taxpayers. Most individuals can face unnecessary complications if they plan their return around an expected extension, making early preparation essential for smooth filing. Filing ahead of your deadline, rather than at the edge, gives you room to fix errors, reconcile AIS mismatches, and avoid the interest and fees that come with a late or belated return. The department's 24x7 helpline from July 25-31 specifically addresses these last-minute challenges by providing round-the-clock assistance for login issues, portal glitches, e-verification queries, refund-related queries, and processing-related concerns.
According to Zee News, one of the biggest challenges taxpayers face during final days of July is finding mismatches in financial information. When people log into the income tax portal at the last moment, errors in documents such as the Annual Information Statement (AIS) or Form 26AS can become difficult to resolve before the deadline. Adhil Shetty, CEO of Bankbazaar, emphasized that if discrepancies appear in Form 26AS or AIS close to the filing deadline, verifying and addressing them with financial institutions takes time. Filing early provides taxpayers the crucial window needed to resolve these issues without missing eligible tax credits or facing refund delays. The department's 24x7 helpline from July 25-31 specifically addresses these verification challenges by providing dedicated support for rectification requests and processing-related queries.
