The Employees' Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO) is preparing to roll out WhatsApp-based member services that will allow subscribers to check PF balances, track claim status and resolve Aadhaar or Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) issues directly through the messaging platform, according to the Ministry of Labour and Employment. Union Labour Minister Mansukh Mandaviya announced that EPFO members will soon get help through WhatsApp, with the service expected to go fully live within the next month. The move is part of EPFO's larger digital push aimed at reducing physical visits, speeding up grievance redressal and improving access to services for crores of EPF members across India. Under the planned WhatsApp support system, members will be able to start conversations by simply sending a 'Hello' message to EPFO's verified WhatsApp number carrying a green tick mark, with the service expected to operate round the clock through automated support systems. EPFO said the platform will offer assistance in local and vernacular languages, making it easier for subscribers across states to access services without navigating complex portals or helplines.
In a significant development, EPFO is introducing UPI-based PF withdrawals for subscribers, marking a major advancement in digital service delivery. As per the latest announcement, testing for the new facility has been completed, and EPFO subscribers may soon be able to transfer eligible PF balances instantly into their bank accounts using UPI. The withdrawal route via the UPI payment gateway has already been tried and tested properly, with officials confirming that the system is ready for full implementation. Members will be able to view the portion of their EPF savings available for withdrawal, with the bank account seeded with EPFO records used for transfer. Users will enter their UPI PIN to authorise the transaction securely, with the approved amount credited directly to the bank account. The system is designed to make PF access faster, easier and more user-friendly, with funds available immediately for digital payments or ATM withdrawals. A certain portion of the EPF corpus may remain frozen while the remaining eligible amount becomes accessible through UPI withdrawals. The new facility could significantly reduce waiting time and paperwork associated with PF withdrawals, making it more similar to digital banking services.
The WhatsApp channel will offer guided facilitation to enable quick and seamless access to essential EPFO services through a familiar interface. Members can start by typing 'Hello' to EPFO's verified number, which carries a green tick mark for safety and assurance. The service is expected to offer assistance in local and vernacular languages, making it easier for subscribers across states to access services without navigating complex portals or helplines. EPFO has identified several core services that will be integrated into the WhatsApp support channel in the first phase, including guided support for Aadhaar authentication issues, assistance for DBT enablement problems, help for PMVBRY-related pending cases, and automated grievance support and query handling. EPFO selected WhatsApp as the preferred platform given its massive user base and ease of access among smartphone users in India, noting that the platform serves as a widely adopted digital communication tool with high penetration across the country. The initiative is expected to help members who face issues related to Aadhaar authentication or Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) activation, with automated assistance available 24/7.
EPFO has intensified efforts to reduce litigation and expedite grievance resolution through mission mode disposal drives to clear cases pending across different legal forums. As part of its 'Nidhi Aapke Nikat' initiative, EPFO launched a dedicated campaign to resolve cases pending in consumer courts. Pending consumer court cases declined sharply from 4,936 as on 1 April 2024 to 2,646 by 31 March 2026, delivering visible results in case resolution. The broader legal backlog has also reduced, with litigation cases declining from 31,036 cases as on April 1, 2025 to 27,639 cases as on April 1, 2026, reflecting a reduction of 3,397 cases and marking the lowest ever level of litigation pendency in EPFO. Special attention was given to older disputes, with the number of cases pending for more than 10 years declining from 8,539 to 4,665, registering a reduction of 3,874 cases, or nearly 45.4 percent.
The digital transformation is expected to significantly reduce the need for physical visits to EPFO offices and lessen dependence on customer care call centres. The WhatsApp expansion comes alongside EPFO's aggressive drive to reduce legal pendency and improve service delivery. EPFO believes the WhatsApp-based support system could further reduce dependency on offices and call centres while improving real-time communication with members. The proposed UPI-based system aims to make PF access more similar to digital banking services that users already rely on daily. The new process is expected to simplify or reduce manual claim procedures for eligible withdrawals, with the facility expected to be available to eligible EPFO subscribers with seeded bank accounts and linked UPI services. The organisation stated that the objective of enhancing outreach and streamlining member services is driving this shift, with the organisation looking at WhatsApp as a tool to strengthen outreach efforts and simplify service delivery for millions of subscribers across the country. Together, the drop in litigation and the push toward WhatsApp support signal EPFO's effort to make dispute resolution faster and day-to-day services simpler for its crores of members.
