In case of member death, eligible family members receive pension under widow or widower pension, children's pension, and orphan pension provisions. As reported by Zee News, on death of a member survived by spouse and children, the family is entitled to receive monthly widow pension and children pension. Biological and legally adopted children are eligible for pension benefits. Nominee pension is provided for life to a person duly nominated by the member in case there is no family as defined under EPS, 1995. For members without surviving spouse, children, or eligible nominee, dependent parents receive the pension. In cases where the member is not married or has no living spouse or eligible child or nominee, dependent parents will be paid the pension.
Members permanently and totally disabled during employment making them unfit for work are entitled to pension from the date of invalidation while in service. According to Zee News reports, the disabled member must undergo medical examination to determine permanent and total unfit status for employment. Any disability certificate issued by the competent authority is adequate provided it certifies the employee is permanently and totally unfit for employment.
Members can draw early pension from age 50 but not earlier than 50 years if they have rendered eligible service of 10 years or more. As reported by Zee News, the pension amount is reduced at the rate of four percent for every year the age falls short of 58 years. This early retirement provision allows workers to access their pension benefits before the standard retirement age while accounting for the reduced service period.
