Banks across India will remain closed for a total of 14 days in August 2026, according to the Reserve Bank of India's bank holidays calendar. This includes both local holidays and regular weekend closures throughout the month. However, banking activities on mobile and internet platforms will remain uninterrupted during these closure periods, ensuring continued digital access for customers. Digital banking services including UPI, net banking, and mobile apps, along with ATM access, will remain unaffected on all holidays.
The RBI has identified 14 specific holidays that will result in branch closures during August 2026. These include Independence Day on August 15, which will cause nationwide bank shutdowns, along with Sundays on August 2, 9, 16, 23, and 30, and Saturdays on August 8 and 22. Additionally, Tuesday, August 4 will see banks in Tripura closed for Ker Puja, while Thursday, August 13 will result in closures across Manipur for Patriot's Day. Wednesday, August 19 will see banks in Tripura closed for Maharaja Bir Bikram Kishore Manikya Bahadur's birthday, and Friday, August 28 will result in closures across multiple states for Raksha Bandhan and other regional festivals.
Several state-specific festivals will result in regional bank closures across India. Banks in Kerala and Andhra Pradesh will be closed on August 25 to celebrate Milad-Un-Nabi/First Onam/Milad-i-Sherif (Birthday of Prophet Muhammad). Banks in Maharashtra, Karnataka, Madhya Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Uttarakhand, Telangana, Manipur, Jammu and Kashmir, Uttar Pradesh, Kerala, Delhi NCR, Bihar, Chhattisgarh, and Jharkhand will be closed on August 26 to celebrate Id-E-Milad/Baravafat/Milad-un-Nabi (Birthday of Prophet Mohammad)/Thiruvonam. According to the RBI list, banks will not be closed for all days consecutively across all states or regions. This represents the total number of days when banks in different parts of the country will remain closed for state-observed holidays. Additional state-specific closures include Parsi New Year on August 16 observed in Daman and Diu, Dadra and Nagar Haveli, Gujarat, and Maharashtra, Tendong Lho Rum Faat on August 8 in Sikkim, and Jhulan Yatra on August 27 in Odisha. Customers in Kerala and Odisha should note additional state-specific closures on 26 and 27 August for Onam and Jhulan Yatra respectively, while branches in Sikkim will shut on 8 August for Tendong Lho Rum Faat. Those in states such as Chhattisgarh, Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, and Uttarakhand will see branches closed on 28 August for Raksha Bandhan, whereas most other states will remain open that day.
The Reserve Bank of India categorizes its holidays under three distinct brackets: Holiday under Negotiable Instruments Act, Holiday under Negotiable Instruments Act and Real Time Gross Settlement Holiday, and Banks' Closing of Accounts. However, it is important to note that bank holidays vary across various states and are not observed by all banking companies. Banking holidays also depend on the festivals being observed in specific states or notifications of specific occasions in those states. Knowing the holiday schedule in advance can help avoid unnecessary trips to banks and complete time-bound transactions without any last-minute rush. For time-sensitive transactions, using NEFT, RTGS, IMPS, or UPI is recommended to avoid delays, these services operate round the clock, including on all gazetted holidays.
