
Commercial vehicle maker Tata Motors Ltd delivered exceptional financial results for the first quarter ended June 30, with consolidated net profit surging 83% to ₹2,556 crore compared to the corresponding period of the preceding fiscal year. According to Business Standard, the company's consolidated total revenue from operations reached ₹20,667 crore, representing a 19.3% increase over the previous year. Vehicle wholesales stood at 108,700 units, representing a 26% growth over the previous year. The strong performance was primarily driven by demand from infrastructure, logistics and freight customers, which helped counter an uptick in commodity costs. As per Tata Motors CEO Girish Wagh, the commercial vehicle industry remained resilient in Q1 FY27, supported by India's strong economic fundamentals, healthy fleet utilisation and sustained demand across key sectors. Wagh noted that "Tata Motors delivered a strong quarter, with volumes growing 26% year-on-year, driven by a winning portfolio, focused market interventions, and disciplined execution. These efforts helped us strengthen customer preference and further consolidate our market position."
The company's EBITDA margin stood at 10.9%, representing a 90 basis points decline from 11.98% in the corresponding quarter of the previous year. However, EBITDA improved by 9.9% year-on-year to ₹2,257 crore, indicating strong operational performance despite margin compression. The margin improvement was supported by rising sales coupled with strategic price adjustments undertaken during this period. As of June 30, 2026, the company maintained a net cash positive position of ₹13,500 crore, which includes TMF Holdings' gross debt, net of the market value of its investments in Tata Capital Ltd. CFO GV Ramanan noted that while commodity pressure continues to persist, the company remains confident in navigating the environment through operational efficiencies, pricing discipline and proactive supply chain management. CLSA reported that Q1 EBITDA margin of 11.3%, down 76 basis points year-on-year, but around 50 basis points ahead of consensus estimates. The bulk of the margin decline was driven by commodity inflation, which had a 340-basis-point negative impact year-on-year, partly offset by operating leverage and price hikes providing a 140-basis-point positive impact.
The company's overall domestic CV VAHAN market share stood at 36.8% in Q1 FY27, an improvement of 100 basis points sequentially, demonstrating strong market positioning. Domestic volumes rose 26% year-on-year, while export volumes increased 35% year-on-year, highlighting the company's successful international expansion strategy. The strong domestic performance was supported by the company's winning portfolio and focused market interventions, with disciplined execution helping strengthen customer preference and consolidate market position. Nomura highlighted strong growth in electric vehicles, with EV penetration reaching 10% in the small commercial vehicle segment, supporting the positive outlook for the electric vehicle segment. The company expects total cost of ownership (TCO) benefits to kick in earlier, with EV growth remaining strong and EV penetration in small commercial vehicles (SCVs) reaching 10%.
Tata Motors CV stock jumped 7.93% to ₹834.65 on Thursday after the strong Q1 results, emerging as a significant gainer in the market. The stock opened nearly 3% higher and climbed to an intraday high, with profit before tax in Q1 FY27 standing at ₹2,970 crore, up by 77.4% from ₹1,674 crore in Q1 FY26. Nomura upgraded the stock to a 'Buy' rating with a target price of ₹554 per share, raising the target from ₹402, implying an upside of nearly 22% from the previous close. JM Financial maintained a 'Buy' rating with a target of ₹353, implying an upside of nearly 13% from the previous close. Nomura raised its FY27 medium and heavy commercial vehicle (MHCV) demand growth forecast to 8% year-on-year from 5% earlier, expecting MHCV volumes to grow at a healthy double-digit pace in Q2 FY27. The positive sentiment reflects brokerages' confidence in the company's ability to navigate commodity pressures through operational efficiencies and pricing discipline. Nomura estimates EBITDA margins at 12.8%/13.9%/14.1% for FY27/FY28/FY29 and raised FY27 and FY28 EBITDA estimates by 10-13%.
Regarding the Iveco deal, Tata Motors announced that regulatory approvals were in the final stage, with one approval still pending. The company stated that all queries raised by the competent authority had been addressed and that the final clearance was expected by the end of August 2026. Accordingly, the Tender Offer is expected to be launched in early September 2026 with an expected closure by early November 2026. JM Financial noted that an export order from Indonesia is expected to be delivered over FY27 and FY28, providing additional growth opportunities. The company's market capitalisation stood at more than ₹1.68 lakh crore, reflecting strong investor confidence in the commercial vehicle business's prospects. JM Financial expects 77.5% exports volume growth in FY27 as Indonesian order deliveries ramp up, with the brokerage revising topline estimates by 2.5% and 3.5% for FY27 and FY28 respectively.
