Multi Commodity Exchange of India Ltd. (MCX) shares are now trading 2% higher on Thursday, August 13, after brokerage firm UBS upgraded the stock to 'Buy' and raised its price target to ₹3,800 from ₹3,600. The revised target implies a potential upside of around 27.9% from Wednesday's closing price. As per UBS analysis, the outlook for MCX has improved on the back of positive regulatory developments, resilient trading volumes and continued support from elevated commodity price volatility. The brokerage noted that MCX's Q1FY27 performance showed strong growth, with revenue reaching ₹700 crore in Q1 FY27, an 88% year-on-year increase, according to UBS. The number of traded clients doubled year-on-year to 13.7 lakh, while futures average daily turnover rose 47% year-on-year to ₹10,500 crore and options notional average daily value increased 266% year-on-year. UBS also sees the stock's valuation as attractive at around 40 times one-year forward price-to-earnings, representing a 15% discount to its three-year average. The upgrade follows a recent 15% price correction from its May peak, which UBS noted leaves the stock trading at an attractive valuation of 40x 12-month forward price-to-earning, a discount of more than 10% to its three-year average.
JP Morgan has upgraded MCX to 'Overweight' from 'Neutral' and raised its price target to ₹3,500 from ₹2,560, representing a 17.8% upside potential. The brokerage expects the proposed FPI access to be a significant opportunity for MCX because it could widen the foreign investor base in exchange-traded commodity derivatives. JP Morgan sees bullion as the main beneficiary, with bullion accounting for about 63% of July futures average daily turnover and about 23% of July options average daily premium turnover. The brokerage expects futures average daily turnover to grow 9.1% in FY28 and 14% in FY29, while options average daily premium turnover is projected to increase 4.5% in FY28 and 10% in FY29. JP Morgan also identified implementation as a risk, noting that the regulatory framework remained at the consultation stage and actual FPI participation will depend on the calibration of the Proprietary Risk Absorption Charge.
For the first quarter FY27, total income was up 85% year-on-year, EBITDA was up 98%, and net profit was up 103%, demonstrating exceptional operational performance. As per Equitymaster.com, MCX operates on a largely fixed-cost model with expenses for exchange maintenance, technology infrastructure, regulatory compliance, and staff salaries remaining relatively static regardless of trading activity. Once these baseline fixed costs are covered, processing additional trading volumes incurs minimal incremental cost, driving higher revenue straight to the bottom line and significantly expanding profit margins. The company's 99% market share across bullion, base metals, and energy creates a self-reinforcing flywheel where higher liquidity attracts more participants, making it nearly impossible for new entrants to gain meaningful traction. Recent product launches include options on its flagship bullion index (MCX BULLDEX), a nickel futures contract with differential trading and delivery units, and India's first-ever electricity futures, alongside new contracts for cardamom and 10-gram gold.
Market experts provided specific buy recommendations for several stocks during NDTV Profit's Ask Profit show. Ruchit Jain, head of technical research at Motilal Financial Services Ltd, recommended buying MCX at current levels of ₹2,638, citing the stock's resistance at 200-day moving average and major support at ₹2,500 levels. Similarly, Sona BLW Precision Forgings received a buy rating with a current market price of ₹818.05, supported by good quarterly results showing volume growth and improved profit margins. As per Jain's analysis, the stock has not breached its 200-day direct moving average once and maintains strong support levels, making it strategically attractive for investors looking to buy on dips.
The stock's trajectory over the next three years will be driven by sustained volume growth, particularly in high-margin commodity options, alongside rising retail and institutional participation, successful product launches, and elevated commodity prices. However, key risks remain including regulatory developments, competitive threats from rival exchanges, required technology investments, and any revisions to transaction fee structures. Future earnings growth, margin expansion, and valuation multiples will heavily depend on these factors. Investors should evaluate the company's fundamentals, corporate governance, and stock valuations before making investment decisions. The structural shift from physical gold to electronic instruments like gold futures and ETFs could drive higher trading volumes for MCX, as investors increasingly prefer trading MCX gold futures for price exposure without physical storage hassles.
