Vodafone Idea has launched free international roaming benefits across select prepaid, postpaid and enterprise plans, marking a significant competitive move in the telecom sector. According to Morgan Stanley analysis, the new plans provide eligible customers with international roaming benefits across more than 170 countries, with select postpaid plans offering one to three free international trips for an additional monthly charge. The initiative brings international roaming into the plan structure instead of requiring separate add-on packs, aimed at improving premium customer retention and acquisition. Morgan Stanley expects the move to increase competition in the postpaid segment but anticipates limited near-term impact on Bharti Airtel's churn due to already low postpaid churn rates.
According to the latest data from the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI), India added 55 lakh mobile subscribers in August, with Reliance Jio continuing to lead with 24.46 lakh new users. Bharti Airtel gained 21.10 lakh subscribers during the month, though this represented a decline from 26.88 lakh additions in July. Vodafone Idea added over 5.06 lakh mobile subscribers, marking a significant improvement from 2.40 lakh additions in the previous month. BSNL recorded strong growth with 4.93 lakh new subscribers, while MTNL witnessed a decline of 5,879 subscribers compared to 5,744 in July. Jio's overall mobile subscriber base rose to 50.84 crore from 50.6 crore in July, while Airtel's increased to 49.16 crore from 48.95 crore.
According to CLSA analysis, Vodafone Idea faces significant spectrum debt challenges with estimated spectrum debt standing at around ₹1.3 trillion ($13.7 billion). While government repayments are relatively manageable at ₹67-167 billion annually in FY27 and FY28, these obligations are expected to rise sharply to around ₹270 billion ($2.8 billion) annually from FY29. CLSA has retained its 'Hold' rating on Vodafone Idea with a target price of ₹13 per share, noting that investors need to look beyond the proposed debt raise of around ₹350 billion ($3.7 billion) in bank debt to support targeted ₹450 billion ($4.7 billion) network investments over FY27-FY29. Vodafone Idea's mobile ARPU of ₹177 currently trails Bharti Airtel by around 26-33%, with the company's revenue market share declining 32 basis points year-on-year to 12.9% in Q1 FY27.
According to Morgan Stanley analysis, the competitive impact is expected to be strongest in postpaid services, where Vodafone Idea has increased monthly charges by ₹50 on selected plans to include international roaming. The research house notes that Bharti Airtel could respond with competing offers if customer movement increases, though the current low postpaid churn rates reduce immediate need for response. Vodafone Idea's existing international roaming packs are priced at ₹649 for 1GB data, 150 minutes outgoing calls and unlimited incoming calls, making the bundled approach more attractive to premium users. Morgan Stanley expects the prepaid impact to be more limited as annual prepaid users represent a smaller portion of the subscriber base with lower international roaming usage. Vodafone Idea stock experienced volatility during recent sessions, with shares ending 4.22% lower at ₹12.95 on Wednesday, reflecting ongoing investor concerns about the company's financial obligations and subscriber trends.
Latest market data shows mixed performance across telecom stocks on September 29, 2026. Bharti Airtel shares recovered from intraday lows to trade 0.73% higher at around ₹1,784.30 ahead of market close, supported by strong wireless subscriber growth and the analyst preference highlighted by Mayuresh Joshi at Marketsmith India. Vodafone Idea demonstrated resilience with a 1.6% surge to ₹23.32 despite earlier declines, while MTNL faced pressure with a 4.4% decline to ₹0.85. The telecom sector's performance reflects investor reaction to the latest TRAI subscription data release, with Bharti Airtel maintaining its position as India's second-largest telecom service provider after Reliance Jio. The sector outlook remains cautious as investors assess the impact of Vodafone Idea's new roaming initiatives on competitive dynamics.
