A weak monsoon triggered by El Niño could significantly impact tractor and entry-level two-wheeler sales as rural incomes and farm cash flows face pressure. According to Vincent K A, senior research analyst at Geojit Investments, both segments have performed better than expectations in Q1 FY27, supported by GST rationalisation and favourable base effects. However, analysts believe the impact is unlikely to be immediate and is expected to become more visible in the second half of FY27. The latest data from The Economic Times confirms that kharif crop sowing is 16 percent lower this season, with the rainfall deficit reaching 18 percent as India's monsoon has weakened significantly.
Analysts emphasize that the impact of weak monsoon conditions depends more on rainfall distribution across key agricultural regions rather than overall national figures. Vincent noted that distribution of rainfall matters more than aggregate quantum, with strong national averages meaning little if key growing belts miss out. As reported by The Economic Times, subdued rainfall is forecast for northwest, west-central, and southern India, with many states facing significant rainfall shortages, particularly in eastern regions. The area under pulses and coarse cereals has significantly declined, while oilseeds and cotton coverage also shows notable decreases. However, sugarcane and jute acreage have seen slight increases, and increased rainfall is expected in the next few weeks.
Pramod Amthe, head of institutional equity research at InCred Capital, expects tractor volume weakness to start from the September quarter, projecting a 5-7% drop in volumes versus double-digit growth in Q1. According to The Economic Times, retail prices are rising due to reduced sowing of key kharif crops, with inflation increasing for rice, oilseeds, and major pulses in June. Underperformance of entry-level bikes versus other two-wheelers post GST cut is expected to expand further. Despite near-term uncertainty, analysts believe companies with diversified businesses and stronger exposure to premium segments are better positioned to navigate volatility. The sowing season for these crops will remain open until August 15, with farmers set to expand acreage for essential kharif crops in response to current crop shortages.
Despite weather challenges, analysts maintain positive outlook on select companies. Axis Direct prefers M&M citing its leadership position in tractors and diversified earnings profile, while TVS Motor remains favourably placed due to balanced domestic and export portfolio. On Hero MotoCorp, the company remains a key rural consumption play backed by commuter motorcycle leadership and deep rural distribution network. Eicher Motors and Bajaj Auto are preferred by InCred Capital citing strong premium segment growth and currency benefits respectively. Recent policy developments show that Karnataka's Chief Minister has highlighted the state's heavy dependence on southwest monsoon and warned of severe consequences for farmers, water availability, and food prices if immediate support is not provided.
