Morgan Stanley has upgraded One 97 Communications Ltd, the parent of Paytm, to Overweight from Equal-weight, raising its price target by 35% to ₹1,950 from ₹1,450 as it sees stronger execution across payments and financial services supporting faster growth and further earnings upgrades. The revised target implies an upside of about 22% from Paytm's closing price of ₹1,601.60 on October 27. The upgrade comes after Paytm shares gained 46% over the preceding six months, with the brokerage noting continued execution, favourable industry developments and the potential for upward revisions to earnings estimates could support a further re-rating of the stock. Consensus estimates for the company's FY28 earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortisation had risen by more than 21% over the same period, according to Morgan Stanley. The upgrade signals growing confidence in Paytm's ability to convert its scale in digital payments into sustained revenue growth and higher profitability.
Paytm shares declined 2.7% to ₹1,614 on Tuesday following the release of Q2FY27 results, reversing early gains despite strong financial performance. The stock had gained 2.4% on Monday ahead of the earnings announcement and has risen 25% so far in 2026, significantly outperforming the Nifty 50 which has declined 13% over the same period. The decline came as investors weighed surging operating expenses and a moderation in payment volumes against a sharp multi-fold expansion in quarterly core profitability. 19 of 24 analysts covering Paytm have recommended a "Buy" rating, with the remaining five recommending "Hold" and none having a "Sell" rating. The 12-month consensus target price stands at ₹1,963.50, implying an upside of 20.4% from current levels. Despite the rally, Morgan Stanley sees scope for further gains as revenue growth accelerates and profitability improves, with the brokerage having increased its valuation multiples across scenarios by as much as 11%.
Following Paytm's strong Q2FY27 results, leading global brokerages have issued mixed ratings reflecting divergent views on the company's growth sustainability and valuation. Emkay Global Financial has now set a target price of ₹2,300 (implying 55.1x FY28E PER), with valuations at 31.9x/21.6x FY28/29E EV/EBITDA considered attractive considering strong revenue growth momentum and operating leverage.

The board approved investments of ₹500 crore each in Paytm Cloud Tech and its Singapore arm, indicating continued focus on technology and international expansion.
Brokerages are particularly optimistic about Paytm's prospects from the proposed UPI merchant discount rate (MDR) implementation after Diwali, which is expected to improve overall payment processing margins by approximately 2.5 basis points. Goldman Sachs estimates the benefit could translate into ₹800–900 crore in EBITDA in FY28, while Citi estimates around ₹900 crore. Morgan Stanley expects the proposed MDR framework could create an incremental revenue opportunity of about ₹900 crore in FY28 and ₹1,100 crore in FY29, with the brokerage forecasting payment GMV to grow at a compound annual growth rate of about 23% between FY27 and FY29. The company has grown its consumer UPI payment gross merchandise value at roughly twice the industry rate over the past few quarters, according to Morgan Stanley. Morgan Stanley expects the payment processing margin improvement to stabilise over two to three quarters as the UPI MDR implementation takes effect. The brokerage has also increased its valuation multiples across scenarios by as much as 11%, citing improved execution, greater growth visibility and potential earnings benefits from MDR changes. Its revised valuation incorporates a 60% probability for the base case, 30% for the bull case and 10% for the bear case. The company is increasing investments in technology, including artificial intelligence, marketing and distribution, with a focus on acquiring monthly transacting users (MTUs) and expanding its on-ground sales force. The potential MDR changes represent a further earnings catalyst, but their contribution depends on the final framework and how much of any incremental revenue Paytm can retain after investments and competitive pressures.
