The Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC) has achieved a historic milestone by setting a new record for ticket bookings. According to The Times of India, IRCTC's website handled its highest-ever single-day booking of 20,06,353 tickets on September 7, 2026, during the festive season advance reservation period. The record was achieved when the festive season train ticket advance reservation window began, with the system continuing to handle heavy booking volumes the following day as well, recording 19,50,699 tickets booked on September 8, 2026. This performance demonstrates the robustness of IRCTC's NGet booking system and its ability to manage exceptionally high transaction volumes during peak demand periods.
According to reports from The Financial Express, monopoly stocks are shares of companies that enjoy a dominant position in a particular industry or niche, often because of high entry barriers, strong brands, unique technology, regulatory advantages or extensive infrastructure. Such companies enjoy pricing power, stable demand, high margins, and predictable cash flows. The analysis focuses on companies that hold near 70% or more market share to identify true monopoly positions. As per Upstox Originals, IRCTC's strongest advantage is not a product, website or service - it is access. The company handles more than 1.5 million ticket bookings every day, making it one of the most heavily transacted websites in the Asia-Pacific region.
As reported by The Financial Express, IRCTC reported Q1 FY27 revenues of ₹13,695 million, against ₹11,597 million YoY. The net profit of IRCTC for Q1FY27 was ₹3,302 million vs ₹3,307 million YoY. The growth was driven by strong contributions from the Catering and Tourism segments. However, according to Upstox Originals, the catering business' profit before interest and taxes (PBIT) fell by 8% year-on-year in FY26, despite the segment being IRCTC's largest by revenue. The company incurred expenses of around ₹1,84,228 lakh on catering services in FY26, up 18% year-on-year, with food quality, pricing, logistics, and railway regulations affecting margins significantly.
According to The Times of India, online booking now accounts for around 89% of all reserved tickets on the Indian Railways network, with the festive season rush becoming evident when the advanced reservation window began this week with Diwali 2026 on November 8, 2026. IRCTC has implemented several measures to modernize its booking system, including NGeT refresh that doubled the system capacity by replacing old servers with new ones. The company introduced a new User Interface beta version from July 15, 2026, featuring contemporary design trends and improved booking experience. Anti-BOT measures have helped reduce malicious BOT traffic by 55% to 65% in recent months, while the Content Delivery Network (CDN) has reduced load on the system and improved experience for genuine users.
According to Upstox Originals, IRCTC's biggest challenge today isn't protecting its monopoly - it's finding another business that can come even close to matching the economics of ticketing. The company's ticketing business constitutes less than one-third of revenue but three-fourths of profits, making it the most profitable segment. The Rail Neer business competes with other bottled-water brands approved for railway network and operates under controlled pricing by the Ministry of Railways. The tourism business competes like everyone else outside its niche of railway-led holidays and pilgrimage circuits, where it enjoys credibility and reach within the Indian Railways ecosystem.
