The Indian Railways has launched a comprehensive nationwide campaign to enhance comfort and service quality on its operational Shatabdi Express and Jan Shatabdi Express trains. According to reports from The Times of India, the Railway Board has directed all zones to conduct detailed inspections of train rakes and prepare time-bound action plans to address deficiencies in passenger amenities. The initiative focuses on modernising flagship trains while continuing to meet rising expectations in terms of cleanliness, reliability, and modern amenities.
Key areas identified for upgradation include improved toilet facilities with better fittings and drainage systems, enhanced seating comfort with upgraded upholstery and functional amenities such as charging ports and snack tables, and smoother ride quality through reduction of jerks in coaches. As reported by The Times of India, improvements to vestibule areas, gangways, and overall coach interiors, including flooring and panels, are also part of the comprehensive plan. Railway officials emphasized that the initiative focuses on passenger-centric reforms with structured upgradation efforts.
The revamp includes better lighting across coaches, improved exterior appearance, clearer destination boards, and the strengthening of digital passenger information systems (PAPIS). According to railway officials cited by The Times of India, the initiative also emphasizes CCTV-based surveillance to enhance safety and communication. Zonal Railways have been asked to carry out audits, identify gaps, and implement corrective measures with strict monitoring mechanisms.
There are approximately 25 pairs of operational Shatabdi Express trains and over two dozen Jan Shatabdi Express trains currently connecting major cities across the country. As reported by The Times of India, this structured upgradation effort represents a significant investment in enhancing the comfort and service quality of India's premium train services, running parallel to the ongoing push for more Vande Bharat and Amrit Bharat trains.
