India's widening water deficit could create an infrastructure investment opportunity worth over ₹20 lakh crore over the next decade, according to PL Capital. The brokerage expects sustained growth across water treatment, recycling and wastewater management sectors. As reported by The Economic Times, PL Capital noted that water demand may exceed supply by nearly 2x by 2030, creating this substantial infrastructure gap that requires urgent investment.
According to PL Capital's report titled 'Water Megatrend 2.0', India accounts for nearly 18% of the global population but only 4% of global freshwater resources, creating a structural water deficit. The domestic brokerage emphasized that water security remains a national priority irrespective of political or economic cycles, underpinning a long-duration growth opportunity for water EPC, treatment, recycling, and O&M players. This structural imbalance necessitates sustained investment across the water value chain to address the growing deficit.
The Indian water and wastewater treatment technology market is projected to grow from nearly $3 billion in FY25 to $5.2 billion by FY31, implying a CAGR of around 10%, as per PL Capital. Simultaneously, the brokerage expects industrial water and wastewater infrastructure spending to grow at around 8% CAGR through 2030, driven by stricter discharge norms, Zero Liquid Discharge (ZLD) mandates, and rising industrial water consumption. These projections highlight the significant expansion potential in India's water infrastructure sector.
India is among the world's largest water and wastewater markets, supported by significant government spending and tightening environmental regulations. Key growth drivers identified by PL Capital include rural water connectivity under Jal Jeevan Mission (JJM), urban water and sewerage infrastructure under AMRUT 2.0, river rejuvenation programs, industrial wastewater treatment, desalination and water reuse projects. The government's continued focus on water infrastructure through these initiatives provides a stable foundation for long-term investment in the sector.
PL Capital has identified VA Tech Wabag, Enviro Infra Engineers and Denta Water as key beneficiaries of this water infrastructure opportunity. The brokerage highlighted that unlike cyclical infrastructure themes, water security remains a national priority, providing a more stable investment environment for companies operating in the water treatment and management sectors. This long-duration growth opportunity is expected to benefit players across the entire water value chain as India addresses its growing water deficit through sustained infrastructure investment.
