The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has expanded the digital FASTag Local Pass facility to 121 toll plazas across the country, enabling local residents to apply for monthly passes online through the Rajmargyatra mobile app. This expansion significantly broadens the digital accessibility of local pass facilities, making them more widely available to eligible commuters nationwide. As per the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways, the facility is aimed at simplifying toll payments for local residents and reducing the need for physical visits to toll plazas and manual submission of documents. The service is expected to cover more locations in the coming months, representing a major advancement in digital tolling infrastructure.
Eligible commuters can now subscribe to the monthly local pass online through the Rajmargyatra Mobile App, eliminating the need for physical visits to toll plazas and manual submission of supporting documents. The app-based system streamlines the application process and reduces administrative burden for both commuters and toll operators. National Highway users can check the list of eligible toll plazas by visiting the official website at https://rajmargyatra.nhai.gov.in/buy-fastag-local-pass. The digital service allows unlimited travel through the respective toll plaza during the month, subject to applicable provisions. The expansion to 121 toll plazas is expected to make the Local Pass process more convenient for regular local commuters.
Under the Digital Local Pass framework, those residing within 20 km radius of an eligible toll plaza can apply for the Local Pass through Rajmargyatra Mobile App. The first Digital Local Pass facility was launched in July 2026 at the Mundka-Bakkarwala toll plaza on Urban Extension Road-II (UER-II) in Delhi. Following the initial rollout, the service has now been extended to 121 toll plazas and is expected to cover more locations in the coming months. Previously, commuters seeking a local pass were required to visit the concerned toll plaza physically and submit documents to establish their residential address within the 20 km range and other eligibility requirements. The digital facility is not available to every FASTag user - eligibility depends on the applicant's registered residential address, vehicle details and specific toll plaza location.
The Digital Local Pass facility leverages consent-based integration with government digital platforms, including DigiLocker and VAHAN, to retrieve and verify relevant information such as the commuter's residential address, vehicle details and linked FASTag. Eligibility is further established through GIS-based verification, which determines whether the applicant's registered address falls within the prescribed 20 km radius of the eligible toll plaza. As per the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways, "The integration of verified digital data and GIS-based validation eliminates the need for manual documentation and physical verification, while ensuring greater consistency, transparency and accuracy in determining eligibility." This technology-driven approach eliminates the need for manual document verification while improving consistency and transparency in determining eligibility, enhancing transparency and efficiency of tolling operations. By shifting verification and application processes online, NHAI aims to reduce physical paperwork and manual intervention while improving transparency and efficiency in local toll services.
The initiative enables eligible commuters to undertake unlimited travel through the respective toll plaza during the month, as per applicable provisions. The pass eliminates the need for physical visits to toll plazas and manual document submission, providing a more convenient and efficient user experience. The digitisation of the Local Pass facility is part of NHAI's efforts to make National Highway services more seamless, technology-enabled and citizen-centric, representing a significant advancement in digital tolling infrastructure that enhances convenience and efficiency for eligible commuters within the prescribed radius. The authority said the Digital Local Pass facility will be rolled out to more toll plazas across the country in the coming months, with the system also reducing scope for manual intervention and streamlining delivery of local toll services to eligible commuters.
