The 63-kilometre Lucknow-Kanpur Expressway officially opened today with a grand inauguration ceremony. According to reports from ANI, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, Union Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari, and Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath jointly inaugurated the expressway. The ceremony also marked the launch of three National Highway projects worth over ₹4,850 crore in Uttar Pradesh. Union Minister Nitin Gadkari described the Lucknow-Kanpur Expressway as a 'historic achievement' that would provide a new direction to Uttar Pradesh's connectivity, as reported by ANI.
The expressway is expected to significantly reduce travel time between the two cities. As reported by ANI, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh stated that the journey between Lucknow and Kanpur will now be completed in 45 to 50 minutes. Deputy Chief Minister Brajesh Pathak provided an even more optimistic estimate, claiming the project will reduce travel time to 30-35 minutes. The access-controlled six-lane expressway is designed to provide faster and safer travel while easing congestion on the existing Lucknow-Kanpur route. Rajnath Singh, who represents Lucknow in the Lok Sabha, confirmed he would be present at the inauguration ceremony in his parliamentary constituency, as reported by ANI.
According to the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI), the expressway will provide faster, smoother and safer travel between the two cities while improving regional connectivity within Uttar Pradesh and with neighbouring states. The expressway will facilitate easier movement towards Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan and Delhi through the Jhansi and Agra routes. It will also improve connectivity towards Bihar and Nepal via the Prayagraj-Varanasi corridor. Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath emphasized that the projects would strengthen infrastructure, improve connectivity and accelerate economic growth in the state, as reported by ANI. The improved connectivity is expected to reduce travel time, ease traffic congestion and enhance commuting convenience for residents and commercial users.
The project will provide passengers travelling between Kanpur and Lucknow with faster and uninterrupted access to Lucknow Airport and the city's major urban road, Shaheed Path, as reported by ANI. This enhanced connectivity will significantly improve regional mobility and trade opportunities across multiple states. Unnao Superintendent of Police Jai Prakash Singh confirmed that elaborate security arrangements have been put in place for the visit of the three dignitaries, with police forces deployed wherever necessary and personnel briefed accordingly.
The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has established a toll structure for the expressway. According to Upstox News Desk, ₹275 has been fixed for a one-way journey and ₹415 for a return trip completed within 24 hours. The expressway operates under an access-controlled design, with two-wheelers and three-wheelers not allowed on the route to ensure faster and safer travel conditions.
Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath emphasized the broader development implications of the infrastructure project. As reported by ANI, he stated that better roads reduce distances, accelerate development, and open up new opportunities for investment. Gadkari described the Lucknow-Kanpur Expressway as a 'landmark project' that will strengthen connectivity in Uttar Pradesh. Adityanath noted that better road networks reduce travel time, encourage investment and contribute to overall development. Rajnath Singh highlighted that the completion of the expressway would be quite convenient for the public, as reported by ANI. Unnao District Magistrate Ghanshyam Meena confirmed that elaborate security arrangements were put in place for the event, with an NHAI exhibition showcasing various highway projects organized for visiting dignitaries.
