The Vande Bharat Sleeper train has officially launched with fares starting at ₹960 for 3AC journeys up to 400 km, marking a significant expansion of India's premium train services. According to Mint, the newly introduced Second Class AC compartment features flight-like comforts including plush, contoured bedding, individual charging docks for smartphones and laptops, and built-in device cradles. Each passenger receives direct control over an automotive-inspired air-ventilation unit, an adjustable reading lamp, and full-length privacy drapes, while expansive sealed glass windows provide unobstructed scenic views along the journey. The 16-car configuration accommodates 823 travelers in total, with 24 First AC berths, 188 Second AC berths, and 611 Third AC berths.
The distance-based rate structure shows 3AC at ₹2.4 per km, 2AC at ₹3.1 per km, and 1AC at ₹3.8 per km (pre-tax), with base fares starting at ₹960 for 3AC, ₹1,240 for 2AC, and ₹1,520 for 1AC for journeys up to 400 km. As reported by Mint, premium tickets on extended intercity routes are priced higher than traditional Rajdhani Express rates, with 1AC seats scaling up to ₹13,300 for maximum routes of 3,500 km. The pricing structure reflects the enhanced amenities and comfort levels offered by the sleeper train services, positioning them as a premium alternative to traditional overnight travel options.
The first prototype of the Vande Bharat sleeper train is now expected to be ready by March 31, 2027, after Rail Vikas Nigam Limited (RVNL) extended its earlier deadline of June 2026. According to Mint, the sleeper trains are being manufactured at the upgraded Marathwada Rail Coach Factory in Latur district of Maharashtra, with RVNL and Russian company Transmashholding (TMH) partnering to establish Kinet Railway Solutions Ltd. The joint venture is tasked with manufacturing 120 Vande Bharat sleeper trainsets, with each trainset comprising 16 coaches and production planned at the Marathwada facility. The project aims to expand India's Vande Bharat fleet with sleeper services for long-distance overnight journeys.
The Vande Bharat Sleeper train features upgraded sanitation facilities with vacuum-assisted, flight-style washrooms featuring touchless flushing systems and superior cleanliness standards. As reported by Mint, adjacent to the lavatories are dedicated vanity areas complete with wide basins and mirrors, while a streamlined pantry module supports smooth delivery for scheduled onboard catering operations. The train includes digital screens delivering real-time metrics including train velocity, approaching stops, and trip updates using integrated GPS technology, ensuring passengers stay informed throughout their journey. The onboard facilities prioritize individual comfort and personal space with modern aesthetics and improved ergonomics designed for modern travelers.
Indian Railways is experiencing a critical shortage of passenger locomotives, forcing the national transporter to deploy slower freight engines on passenger trains, resulting in operational delays of several hours. Railway records show that 80 to 100 such incidents occur monthly across railway zones nationwide, with instances reported across almost every railway zone in the country. The shortage has become so severe that trains are being hauled by freight engines designed for lower speeds, affecting running times and causing significant operational delays.
