The Greater Noida board on Thursday approved construction of a 7-km double-decker flyover aimed at easing traffic between Ek Murti Chowk and the Delhi-Meerut Expressway through the narrow, heavily encroached Shahberi stretch. According to The Times of India, this represents a first for the city as one lane will cater to traffic from Greater Noida West towards the Delhi-Meerut Expressway (DME), while the other will serve vehicles from Ghaziabad and Crossings Republik. The ₹756-crore project requires approval from two other development authorities - Noida and Yamuna - which will share the projected cost. Greater Noida Authority CEO Ravi Kumar NG confirmed that the project was approved at the 144th board meeting, though it remains pending final approval from the two other authorities.
The board also cleared a 105-metre road connecting Junpat with the Eastern Peripheral Expressway (EPE), which is expected to improve connectivity to Ghaziabad, Dadri and the proposed multi-modal transport hub (MMTH) in Bodaki. As reported by The Times of India, the 12-km Junpat-EPE road will be constructed by the NHAI and will cross a railway line and the Eastern Dedicated Freight Corridor before meeting the EPE. The Greater Noida Authority will provide the land required for this project. The 10-lane corridor is proposed to improve connectivity from Pari Chowk to Bodaki and Dadri, the sites for upcoming multi-modal transport and logistics hubs.
According to The Times of India, Greater Noida West, Shahberi, Crossings Republik and adjoining residential areas along the DME have emerged as major affordable housing hubs over the past decade. However, factors such as inadequate road connectivity and proximity have played a key role in recurring traffic snarls and extended vehicle queues. The double-decker design was considered necessary because the area is dotted by condominiums and the Shahberi road is too narrow. The Authority has already identified land parcels in Patwari and Birondi villages for constructing EWS flats for construction workers, with construction expected to begin by year-end.
The Greater Noida board approved several other proposals including residential projects for construction workers and labourers who migrate from other cities or states, as well as a response centre for National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) personnel. As reported by The Times of India, the board cleared the proposal to allot at least 30 flats free of cost in Omicron-1A to develop a regional response centre for the NDRF's 8th Battalion in Ghaziabad. After a row over rescue operation delays when a 28-year-old software engineer, Yuvraj Mehta, drowned on January 16, NDRF had sought space for setting up a camp and staff office in Greater Noida to speed up relief and rescue operations during natural disasters, industrial accidents, floods and other emergencies. The Authority will also develop hostels under the state government's Transit Hostel Scheme for construction workers, with 3,000-sqm land each to be handed over to the labour department in Ecotech 6 and 11.
According to The Times of India, the Authority has already identified land parcels in Patwari and Birondi villages for constructing EWS flats for construction workers, with construction expected to begin by year-end. The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) is yet to finalise the details of the double-decker flyover project, while the 12-km Junpat-EPE road will be constructed by NHAI with the Greater Noida Authority providing required land. The board also cleared the way for the construction of a three-storey public library spanning 1,360 sqm in Alpha 1.
