Delhi Airport's third runway, Runway 11R/29L, is set to reopen on Sunday, September 20, 2026, nearly seven months after it was shut for an extensive rehabilitation programme. According to Delhi International Airport Limited (DIAL), the runway was shut on February 25, 2026, for the rehabilitation project and has now completed all required inspections and validations to receive necessary clearances ahead of its reopening. The rehabilitation programme was carried out in coordination with the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA), Airports Authority of India (AAI), Air Traffic Control (ATC), airlines and other stakeholders to meet safety and regulatory requirements. The runway was originally commissioned in 2008 and had been in continuous service for 17 years before the current upgrade, with regular maintenance including minor rehabilitation in 2017.
The comprehensive rehabilitation programme included several major airside infrastructure updates as reported by DIAL. Runway resurfacing was carried out to refurbish the runway surface, while permanent threshold displacement of Runway 29L was completed as part of the programme. A new Rapid Exit Taxiway (RET Z1) was constructed to allow aircraft to leave the runway more quickly after landing, potentially reducing runway occupancy time. Additionally, airfield ground lighting systems were upgraded, along with pavement strengthening, and associated civil and electrical infrastructure improvements. These enhancements are expected to improve runway efficiency, optimise aircraft movement, reduce runway occupancy time and further strengthen operational reliability in varying weather conditions. The upgraded runway will play a significant role in supporting the airport's operational efficiency and future traffic growth.
According to DIAL, authorities expect these upgrades to improve the airport's capacity and ability to handle rising air traffic more effectively. Delhi Airport currently handles more than 1,300 flight movements a day across its four runways and has an annual passenger capacity of 106 million, as reported by DIAL. The upgraded runway features the new Rapid Exit Taxiway and improved navigation and lighting systems, enhancing operational efficiency and safety standards. The third runway, which was commissioned in 2008 and had been in continuous service for 17 years, is now better equipped to manage the airport's daily flight operations. The recommissioned runway will play a crucial role in supporting the airport's operational efficiency and future traffic growth at one of India's busiest aviation gateways.

Additionally, Delhi Airport has introduced dedicated gates for light travellers, allowing passengers carrying hand luggage or travelling without luggage to use separate gates and skip regular queues, helping save time during busy hours. The enhanced operational capabilities will enable the airport to handle more flights and passengers effectively. DIAL CEO Pradeep Panicker emphasized that the recommissioning marks an important milestone in Delhi Airport's journey towards building future-ready aviation infrastructure, reflecting the company's commitment to safety, operational excellence, and passenger service.
The reopening of the third runway is expected to significantly improve passenger experience at Delhi Airport through enhanced operational flexibility and reduced delays. According to DIAL, the upgraded runway will provide better runway flow during peak hours, particularly benefiting domestic flyers on peak-hour banks with improved scheduling. International arrivals will gain most from smoother landing sequences, while winter travellers will benefit from improved lighting and Category III capability for low-visibility operations. The new Rapid Exit Taxiway (RET Z1) is designed to allow landing aircraft to vacate the runway at higher speeds, cutting runway occupancy time and enabling shorter waits on the taxiway and steadier schedules for passengers. Since the closure, Delhi Airport operated on three runways, but the reopening restores the full four-runway configuration with IGI Airport now operating 09/27, 10/28, 11L/29R and 11R/29L runways.
