According to reports from The Hindu BusinessLine, the student base currently stands at 10,500, while the number of institutions offering actuarial education has grown from 10 to 30 with a target of 100 by 2031. The institute launched a job portal and brand bible during Actuaries Day 2026, alongside announcing the 26th Global Conference of Actuaries.
India's insurance penetration stood at 3.7 per cent of GDP in 2024-25, significantly below the global average of 7 per cent, while insurance density was approximately $100 compared with the global average of around $1,000, as noted by Dr Debasish Prusty, Additional Secretary, Department of Financial Services, Ministry of Finance. The country is projected to become the sixth-largest insurance market within five to six years. Parliament's passage of the Sabka Bima Sabki Raksha Act 2025 raised the foreign direct investment limit in insurance from 74 per cent to 100 per cent, with total foreign investment in the sector, including foreign reinsurance branches, standing at close to ₹90,000 crore as of April 2026.
IAI signed a memorandum of understanding with Bhimtech to collaborate on carbon markets and carbon credits, signalling a push into climate-linked financial risk. As reported by The Hindu BusinessLine, the institute's Education Policy 2026 now formally includes climate-linked financial risk alongside data science, artificial intelligence, and ESG. Prusty flagged AI adoption as both an opportunity and a compliance risk for the profession, calling on actuaries to serve as "ethical gatekeepers" to monitor algorithmic bias, consumer data privacy, and institutional integrity.
The Department of Financial Services is working with IAI on amendments to the Actuaries Act, 2006, according to Prusty, without specifying a timeline. The event was addressed virtually by Dr Debasish Prusty and was attended in person by Ms Preeti Chandrashekhar, IAI President; Vice President Anurag Rastogi; Honorary Secretary Ms Asha Murali; and Mike Lombardi, President of the International Actuarial Association.
