The Indian government has announced the extension of zero customs duty exemption on nearly 40 critical petrochemical products until July 15, 2026, providing an additional 15-day relief period beyond the earlier deadline of June 30, 2026. According to the latest update from the Ministry of Finance, this policy decision affects several critical petrochemical products that are essential for various industrial applications. The duty exemption, which was originally introduced on April 2 as a temporary relief measure, has been extended through a notification issued by the Finance Ministry. The extension provides continuity in the duty-free import regime for these products, maintaining the current trade policy framework for the petrochemical sector during ongoing global supply chain disruptions.
The zero customs duty exemption applies to nearly 40 critical petrochemical products that are strategically important for India's industrial base. As reported by Business Standard, these products include Methanol, Anhydrous ammonia, Toluene, Styrene, Dichloromethane (methylene chloride), Vinyl chloride monomer, Polybutadiene, Styrene-butadiene and Unsaturated polyester resins, among others. The exemption is expected to benefit a wide range of sectors dependent on petrochemical feedstock and intermediates, including plastics, packaging, textiles, pharmaceuticals, chemicals, automotive components and other manufacturing segments. The Ministry noted that this measure will help reduce cost pressures on downstream sectors and safeguard supply stability in the country, with the government stating the exemption is expected to benefit sectors that rely on petrochemical feedstock and intermediates while also providing relief to consumers of finished products.
The government has justified this measure as a response to ongoing conflict in West Asia and consequent disruptions in global supply chains. According to Business Standard, the Ministry of Finance emphasized that this temporary relief is necessary to ensure the continued availability of critical petrochemical inputs for the domestic industry. The policy decision provides certainty for importers and manufacturers who rely on these products for their operations, while also benefiting consumers of final products across multiple manufacturing segments. The extension ensures stability in the petrochemical import policy and maintains the current trade facilitation measures during a period of global supply chain uncertainty. As the situation is gradually normalizing, the government has decided to extend the exemption by a further period of 15 days to ensure a smooth and non-disruptive transition for the affected sectors.
