The Coal Ministry is set to launch the 15th Round of Commercial Coal Mine Auctions on Friday, April 17, 2026, according to reports from The Hindu BusinessLine, ETEnergyworld, PTI, Devdiscourse, ANI, and Informist Media. The event will be held in Mumbai and will be graced by Vikram Dev Dutt, Secretary, Ministry of Coal, as the Chief Guest. This round will offer a fresh set of fully explored and partially explored coal blocks, inviting participation from experienced miners, new entrants, and technology-driven enterprises alike. The auctions will be conducted under liberalised terms to promote ease of doing business, encourage wider participation and support investment in the sector. As part of the launch, the ministry will also organise a stakeholder consultation on 'Atmanirbhar Bharat: Coal for Energy Security' to bring together industry players, investors and state government representatives to discuss auction modalities, mining reforms and opportunities in the commercial coal block framework.
Since the launch of commercial coal mining in 2020, the initiative has significantly enhanced domestic coal availability and reinforced the nation's energy security. According to the Ministry's data, in the last 13 rounds of commercial coal mine auctions, a total of 136 blocks have been allotted to successful bidders. Of this, around 117 blocks have been won by the private sector, demonstrating strong private sector participation in coal mining operations. The ministry reports that commercial coal mining, launched in 2020, has enhanced domestic coal availability, strengthened energy security and reduced import dependence. This tranche marks a significant development in the government's coal sector liberalisation drive, with 14 previous rounds offering over 100 blocks and attracting significant investments. The 15th round is expected to further energise the sector by encouraging investments and supporting employment generation, while also strengthening India's broader energy ecosystem.
The Ministry emphasized that this round continues the progressive journey of strengthening India's energy landscape with a renewed focus on growth, efficiency, and self-reliance. As reported by The Hindu BusinessLine, ETEnergyworld, PTI, Devdiscourse, ANI, and Informist Media, the initiative reflects the Ministry's sustained commitment to supporting India's growing energy needs and advancing the vision of a self-reliant nation. The ministry has set a domestic production target of about 1.5 Billion Tonne (BT) by FY30. The Coal Ministry stated that the framework has introduced transparency and competition, creating a level playing field for participants while ensuring steady coal supply for industries. The ministry added that expanding domestic coal output remains critical to meeting the country's rising energy demand and that the commercial coal mine auction framework has played a transformative role in the sector by enhancing efficiency and boosting investor confidence. The government aims to build on previous successes and further reinforce long-term growth and resilience in the coal sector, while ensuring reliable and affordable energy supply for the country.
The International Energy Agency (IEA) in its world energy employment report stated that India's push to expand commercial coal mining is leading to a 'resurgence' in coal supply jobs with the workforce growing by 74,000 positions in 2024 with the trend likely to continue. This represents significant employment generation in the coal sector as part of India's broader energy security initiatives. The ministry's efforts to boost private sector participation in coal production amid rising energy demands are expected to further enhance employment opportunities in the sector. The 15th round is expected to further energise the sector by encouraging investments and supporting employment generation, while also strengthening India's broader energy ecosystem. The initiative has contributed to higher coal production and ensured a more stable supply of the fuel to core industries such as power, steel, and cement. Coal mining operations have been made a significant part of the Indian energy policy, aiding in providing a stable source of energy that can be utilized for the generation of electricity and other industrial purposes.
