The Coal Ministry on Friday opened bids for the 15th round of commercial coal block auctions, held alongside the second attempt of the 13th and 14th tranches. According to the ministry, 21 bids were submitted for eight coal blocks, with participation from 16 companies, including four first-time bidders under the commercial coal mining regime. The ministry described the response as reflecting "robust industry participation" in India's commercial coal mining framework. The auction process followed established procedures with online bids decrypted and opened electronically, followed by the opening of sealed envelopes containing offline bid documents in the presence of participating bidders.
The auction results show eight of the 23 coal blocks on offer received bids, indicating selective interest from the industry. The ministry noted that the entry of four new bidders demonstrates industry confidence in the policy framework and the opportunities emerging in the coal sector. The bids will now be examined by a multidisciplinary Technical Evaluation Committee, with bidders found to be technically qualified being shortlisted for participation in the electronic auction conducted on the MSTC portal. The ministry emphasized that the steady interest shown reaffirms the sector's attractiveness and critical role in industrial growth and energy security.
The auction proceedings were conducted with complete transparency, with the online bids first decrypted and opened electronically, followed by the opening of sealed envelopes carrying offline bid documents. The process was carried out in the presence of participating bidders, with proceedings displayed live on screen to ensure complete transparency. This multi-stage approach ensures that all bids are properly evaluated and that the selection process is transparent and fair to all participants.
