Justice Ranjana Prakash Desai was born on 30 October 1949 in Mumbai and completed her legal education with a Bachelor of Arts from Elphinstone College in 1970 and LL.B from Government Law College in 1973. According to her official profile on the 8th CPC website, she began her legal career as a junior in the chambers of Late Justice SC Pratap and was appointed as Government Pleader on the Appellate Side of the Bombay High Court in 1979. She was elevated to the Supreme Court on 13 September 2011 and served until her retirement, subsequently holding various chairperson positions including the Delimitation Commission of India from March 2020 to May 2022. Prior to her appointment to the CPC, Justice Desai served as the Chairperson of the Press Council of India till 16 December 2025.
