This will be Wang's first visit to India in almost a year, following his last trip to New Delhi in August 2025 where he held bilateral meetings with NSA Ajit Doval and External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar. The visit comes as part of the ongoing thaw in bilateral ties between the two countries, with the meeting coming at a time of heightened geopolitical tensions in several regions.
Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi emphasized that it is 'imperative' for India and China to respect each other's 'core interests' and take concrete actions to implement the 'important consensus' reached by the leaders of both countries, according to China's state-run Xinhua news agency. Wang made these remarks during his meeting with National Security Advisor Ajit Doval on Monday in New Delhi, as reported by Business Standard. "India is an important neighbour of China, and bilateral relations have returned to the track of recovery and improvement," Wang stated, noting that the leaders of the two countries agreed that China and India are partners instead of rivals, thus forming the most important strategic consensus between the two sides. As the two economies with the largest populations, China and India should not only view bilateral relations from a long-term perspective, but also promote cooperation between the two countries from a global perspective, Wang added, highlighting the strategic importance of their relationship.
Indian National Security Adviser Ajit Doval met Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi on Monday on the sidelines of the BRICS National Security Advisers meeting in New Delhi, as reported by Business Standard. India's foreign ministry described the talks between Doval and Wang as 'constructive and forward-looking'. The two leaders discussed recent developments in their relationship and 'noted progress towards gradual normalisation', according to the official statement. During the meeting, NSA Ajit Doval stressed the importance of consistent, enduring and practical relations with China in building trust and understanding between the two sides, as reported by MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal. "NSA Doval underlined that stable, predictive and constructive bilateral relations contribute to building of trust and better understanding between the two sides," he said. Both Wang and Doval are the Special Representatives of the India-China border issue, adding significant political weight to the diplomatic engagement.
According to the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), the conclave of BRICS National Security Advisers will be chaired by NSA Ajit Doval and will focus on the theme 'Non-traditional security challenges confronting the world today'. As reported by Business Standard, the meeting will also discuss the rapidly evolving nature of national security challenges, as well as the role of new technologies in emerging security threats. The officials will exchange views on the overall regional security scenario including the situation in West Asia as well as the Russia-Ukraine conflict. The Chinese Foreign Minister is also a member of the Political Bureau of the ruling Communist Party of China and Director of the Office of the Central Foreign Affairs Commission, adding significant political weight to the diplomatic engagement. The 16th Meeting of BRICS National Security Advisers and High Representatives on National Security will focus on the changing landscape of national security, particularly challenges posed by emerging technologies and evolving threats. The Chinese side will also review the outcomes of the recently held BRICS Joint Working Groups on Counter-Terrorism, and on Security in the use of Information and Communication Technologies.
Wang underlined the need to advance the restoration of dialogue mechanisms and promote exchanges in various fields, such as trade, finance, law enforcement and media, as reported by Xinhua. The two sides should also actively guide all sectors of society to form a correct understanding, and lay a solid public opinion and social foundation for improving bilateral relations, Wang added. India and China rolled out a series of measures in the last over one year to rebuild their relationship after it witnessed a major downturn following the deadly Galwan Valley clashes in 2020 and the subsequent military face-off that lasted for over four years. In August last year, Doval and Wang held Special Representatives dialogue in New Delhi that produced a number of outcomes to maintain peace along the border. The BRICS National Security Advisors Meeting serves as a high-level platform that brings together the National Security Advisors of the 11 BRICS member-states to exchange views on key security challenges, with the bloc including Brazil, China, Egypt, Ethiopia, India, Indonesia, Iran, Russia, Saudi Arabia, South Africa and the United Arab Emirates. BRICS has emerged as an influential grouping as it brings together 11 major emerging economies of the world, representing around 49.5 per cent of the global population, around 40 per cent of the global GDP and around 26 per cent of the global trade.
