WhatsApp Pay achieved remarkable growth in July 2026, processing 167.89 million UPI transactions worth ₹12,957.07 crore, according to reports from Business Standard. This represents more than double the transaction volume from the previous year, demonstrating the messaging platform's accelerating adoption in India's digital payments ecosystem. The service has now established itself as the eighth-largest UPI app by transaction volume, surpassing established players like Cred and Amazon Pay.
The July 2026 performance represents a significant improvement from the previous year's figures. As reported by Business Standard, WhatsApp Pay processed 74.6 million transactions worth ₹5,412.58 crore in July 2025, positioning it as the 11th-largest UPI app at that time. The service first reached the 100 million transaction mark in December 2025, marking a substantial milestone in its growth trajectory.
The growth in WhatsApp Pay's transaction volumes comes approximately 19 months after the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) removed restrictions on user onboarding in December 2024, according to Business Standard reports. The NPCI had initially granted WhatsApp approval in November 2020 to operate on UPI under the multi-bank model, initially allowing it to onboard 20 million users. The user limits were subsequently increased to 40 million in 2021 and 100 million in 2022, before the restrictions were completely removed in 2024.
In the competitive UPI landscape, WhatsApp Pay's growth trajectory positions it among established players. As reported by Business Standard, PhonePe, Google Pay and Paytm remained the largest UPI apps in July 2026, with PhonePe processing 10.85 billion transactions, followed by Google Pay's 7.64 billion and Paytm's 1.90 billion. The data from NPCI shows WhatsApp Pay's consistent growth from 17.84 million transactions worth ₹1,598.67 crore in 2023 to its current position as the eighth-largest player.
