The National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) has launched Drunix, an open-source blockchain platform designed to help enterprises build blockchain networks, digital asset ecosystems and tokenisation platforms at scale. According to latest reports, Drunix is a high-performance distributed ledger platform built as an enhanced fork of Hyperledger Fabric, which is an open-source enterprise blockchain framework developed under the umbrella of the Linux Foundation. The platform is engineered for enterprise and public-infrastructure adoption and enables blockchain deployment at scale without compromising on privacy, governance, or interoperability. While maintaining compatibility with existing Hyperledger Fabric ecosystems, the platform introduces significant architectural enhancements to improve throughput, scalability, and operational efficiency. As an enhanced fork of Hyperledger Fabric, Drunix prioritizes scalability, operational efficiency, privacy, governance, and interoperability, while maintaining compatibility with existing Hyperledger Fabric ecosystems.
Vishal Kanvaty, chief technology officer at NPCI, stated that through Drunix, the organisation aims to accelerate blockchain readiness by providing the ecosystem with foundational technologies that support experimentation, interoperability and real-world adoption. As reported by Business Standard, this initiative reflects NPCI's commitment to strengthening India's digital infrastructure while contributing to the global advancement of open-source innovation. "Through Drunix, we aim to accelerate blockchain readiness by providing the ecosystem with foundational technologies that support experimentation, interoperability and real-world adoption. This initiative reflects our commitment to strengthening India's digital infrastructure while contributing to the global advancement of open-source innovation," Kanvaty emphasized, highlighting the platform's role in creating reusable technology building blocks that can accelerate the adoption of distributed ledger technologies across industries.
According to Business Standard, Drunix marks NPCI's second major open-source contribution in the blockchain and tokenisation space, following Falcon, which focused on production-grade blockchain network management and orchestration. The apex retail payments body has also rolled out other initiatives such as the Finance Model for India (FiMI), Vigil-AI and Falcon. Drunix extends this vision by addressing the core blockchain runtime and transaction processing layer, building on NPCI's extensive research and experimentation in blockchain and tokenization technologies. The platform is engineered to facilitate the widespread adoption of blockchain technology for organizations looking to build tokenization platforms, digital asset ecosystems, and multi-organization networks.
As reported by Business Standard, moving beyond digital payments, NPCI, the operator of the Unified Payments Interface (UPI), is planning to add more muscle to the country's digital infrastructure by setting up a fourth subsidiary, NPCI Tech Solutions Ltd (NTSL). The apex payments body is planning to scale up central infrastructure pipes through the subsidiary, while also experimenting with pilot projects including infrastructure-led products beyond payments such as eKYC (electronic Know Your Customer) Setu and systems related to the central bank digital currency. With this open-source contribution, NPCI continues to strengthen its role in enabling innovation and building efficient foundational technologies that support the evolution of India's digital infrastructure.
