
Mitsubishi UFJ Financial Group (MUFG) has launched a proof-of-concept (PoC) for Japanese government bond transactions on the Canton network, targeting real-time, 24/7 onchain settlement to replace traditional methods that require one to three days. According to latest reports, the pilot involves MUFG Bank, Mitsubishi UFJ Morgan Stanley Securities, and Mitsubishi UFG Trust and Banking, working alongside Digital Asset (creator of Canton Network) and Progmat. MUFG stated that high creditworthiness and liquidity make JGBs ideal for onchain repo collateral, citing similar U.S. and European precedents. The system enables faster settlement without first solving the harder legal and market-structure questions around tokenizing the bonds themselves, with Canton designed for institutional finance allowing transaction details to be shared only with parties that need to see them, providing enhanced security and privacy. MUFG is targeting commercial deployment by fiscal 2027 for its blockchain-based Japanese government bond (JGB) repo settlement system. This timeline positions the project as more than a niche demonstration, targeting the core funding plumbing of Japan's financial system. Think of a repo as a short-term loan where one party sells a bond and agrees to buy it back later, usually the next day. Right now, the cash-and-bond exchange doesn't happen simultaneously. MUFG wants to change that with this atomic delivery-versus-payment mechanism. The actual JGBs aren't being tokenized - they stay within Japan's traditional book-entry system, with the blockchain layer handling synchronized updates. The settlement side uses tokenized deposits or stablecoins, which Japan's major banks have been developing in parallel. Canton Network, a blockchain infrastructure developed by Digital Asset, serves as the backbone alongside Progmat's platform and protocols from Secured Finance AG. The project includes two distinct testing phases to demonstrate comprehensive blockchain integration. One part tests simultaneous JGB and digital-money settlement between JGBs and digital money, synchronizing the securities leg with the cash leg to reduce settlement risk. Digital Asset provides the Canton-based tokenization framework while Progmat supports analysis of current market practices and product design. The second phase goes beyond settlement, with Secured Finance AG using its lending protocol to test automation across the entire repo transaction lifecycle, including functions handled through smart contracts. MUFG expects this design could improve operational efficiency while supporting real-time intraday repo transactions and longer settlement windows. Japan introduced a stablecoin regulatory framework in 2023 that requires qualifying issuers to meet licensing and other requirements, while the treatment of bank-issued digital tokens and tokenized financial assets continues to develop. Interoperability will be critical as a blockchain settlement platform would need to work effectively with existing banking systems, custodians, securities infrastructure and regulatory processes. Cybersecurity and operational resilience would be critical because any disruption could affect high-value institutional transactions.
