HDFC Bank has unveiled five comprehensive digital rupee use cases that demonstrate the growing relevance of India's sovereign digital currency across multiple sectors. According to reports from Business Standard, the lender is creating digital rupee gift vouchers for customer promotions, integrating its CBDC wallet with BHIM for UPI-style merchant payments, and developing offline digital rupee payments for flights. The bank is also planning a digital rupee portal through its corporate net-banking platform for corporate customers, showcasing how CBDC can be embedded into high-frequency, real-world moments across both retail and wholesale ecosystems.
Under the credit card rewards program, customers will be able to redeem reward points against digital rupees across categories including dining, fuel, apparel and electronics, with redemption possible down to the last paise. For corporate customers, the bank is developing a digital rupee portal through its corporate net-banking platform, allowing companies to disburse meal, fuel and travel allowances directly in digital rupees with programmable payouts restricting fund usage to intended purposes. As reported by Business Standard, these features address emerging needs around purpose-bound payments, compliance and auditability across retail and wholesale markets. Mr. Rajanish Prabhu, Senior EVP, HDFC Bank, emphasized that the next phase of Digital Rupee adoption will be driven by scale and everyday utility, bringing CBDC into familiar journeys like UPI, merchant acceptance, rewards, employee benefits and offline payments.
The bank is working on offline digital rupee payments on flights, enabling customers to tap their phones on HDFC Bank point-of-sale devices onboard aircraft to pay for food, beverages and seat upgrades without internet connectivity. According to Business Standard, HDFC Bank's digital rupee wallets will be made available on BHIM, allowing customers to make UPI-style payments directly from their CBDC wallets and expanding merchant acceptance. The digital rupee gift vouchers will be credited to customers' HDFC Bank digital rupee wallets upon qualifying events and can be used by scanning any UPI QR code at merchants. Mr. Ashish Parthasarathy, Group Head, Branch Banking, Payments, Treasury, Liability Products, Marketing, Virtual Channels and Infrastructure, HDFC Bank, noted that Digital Rupee combines the trust of sovereign money with programmability, transparency and stronger controls, making it easier for customers and businesses to use the Digital Rupee in daily life.
