The Employees' Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO) is launching WhatsApp-based chatbot services within a month to handle member communication and basic account-related requests, aiming to reduce dependence on physical visits and call centres. According to reports from Business Standard, Union Minister for Labour and Employment Mansukh Mandaviya announced that members can simply type 'Hello' to EPFO's registered WhatsApp number to initiate conversations with EPFO. The service will be available in regional languages and supported by automated systems capable of handling routine queries round the clock. As reported by The Times of India, EPFO chose WhatsApp due to its widespread adoption across India, ease of use and ability to support multilingual communication. The mobile-first approach is expected to streamline member services, reduce dependence on physical EPFO visits, and lower pressure on customer care and call centre operations. According to Mint, the minister emphasized that WhatsApp was selected as a medium of communication because most mobile users already use WhatsApp for their communication, with all communication to be done using local/vernacular language to enable greater comfort for members.
The Ministry of Labour and Employment is ready to roll out a major reform allowing 7.48 crore subscribers of the Employees' Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO) to withdraw up to 75 per cent of their provident fund (PF) balance through a UPI interface directly into their linked bank accounts. According to The Hindu BusinessLine, the new EPFO 3.0 architecture will enable members to access their PF service records similar to bank facilities, helping resolve issues from any EPFO office across the country. Of the 29 crore registered PF accounts, 7.48 crore accounts are active and the remaining dormant ones. The next level of digital reform will offer a completely new architecture, with core banking solutions at the backend of the centralised system to streamline services and reduce time-consuming, complex paperwork.
The upcoming WhatsApp platform is expected to provide 24x7 automated support for repetitive queries, helping users receive quicker responses without waiting for manual assistance. According to the latest reports, the service will offer quick access to PF-related information without visiting EPFO offices or logging into multiple portals. The platform is designed to provide menu-based service options in local and vernacular languages to ensure comfortable interaction in preferred languages. Members can send messages to EPFO through WhatsApp for assistance or receive alerts linked to their PF account, with responses handled through an AI-powered chatbot connected with EPFO databases. The facility aims to make EPFO services faster, simpler and more accessible for smartphone users while improving real-time engagement between EPFO and subscribers. As reported by Mint, the proposed services are also expected to offer 24/7 access, with automated systems handling repetitive queries on basic account-related requests round the clock.
EPFO plans to use WhatsApp for targeted outreach to members eligible under the PMVBRY scheme who have pending compliance gaps, including incomplete Aadhaar authentication using UIDAI's Face Authentication Technology (FAT) or non-enablement of Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) for Aadhaar-linked bank accounts. Under the proposed workflow, EPFO will first verify whether a message originates from the member's registered mobile number linked to the Universal Account Number (UAN). Once verified, users will receive menu-based options in local languages to access services or complete pending actions. The initiative will focus on members requiring guided facilitation to enable quick and seamless access to essential EPFO services such as viewing PF balances, the last five transactions, claim status, and other account-related information. The platform will also help users access routine EPFO services such as checking PF balances, viewing recent transactions and tracking claim status through guided assistance, according to Business Standard.
EPFO has achieved significant progress in reducing litigation through targeted disposal drives, bringing total pending cases down to 27,639 as on April 1, 2026, from around 31,036 cases earlier. According to reports from The Times of India, Labour and Employment Minister Mansukh Mandaviya said the government has begun acting against EPFO-related litigation piling up in consumer forums, with cases being resolved through pre-identified mechanisms. Under the 'Nidhi Aapke Nikat (NAN)' programme, cases declined significantly from 4,936 as on April 1, 2024, to 2,646 as on March 31, 2026. The EPFO conducted a nationwide special campaign during February-March 2026 for cases pending before Central Government Industrial Tribunals (CGITs), resulting in the disposal of 353 appeals while efforts continue for expeditious disposal of another 650 related cases. The number of cases pending for more than 10 years declined from 8,539 to 4,665, registering a reduction of 3,874 cases, or nearly 45.4 per cent, as reported by Mint.
