
The S&P BSE Sensex declined 0.40% to close at 76,957.27 while the Nifty 50 fell 0.52% to settle at 24,050.25 on August 31, 2026. According to latest reports, the benchmark indices came under selling pressure amid volatility across the green energy, power and clean technology sectors. The broader market showed mixed performance with 1,970 shares rising, 2,110 shares falling, and 241 shares unchanged on the BSE, reflecting continued stock-specific volatility across India's renewable energy ecosystem.
The renewable energy sector witnessed significant profit booking with Adani Green Energy recording the steepest decline, falling 6.93% on the BSE to ₹1,217.95 and 3.67% on the NSE to ₹1,262.90. Sterling and Wilson Renewable Energy also declined sharply, losing 3.40% on the BSE to ₹189.00 and 3.03% on the NSE to ₹189.45. Other major clean energy companies ended lower, including Amara Raja Energy & Mobility falling 2.94% to ₹893.70, Olectra Greentech declining 2.62% to ₹1,280.00, and Inox Wind dropping 2.02% to ₹70.31. However, Juniper Green Energy emerged as the strongest performer among clean energy stocks, gaining 2.35% on the BSE to ₹264.00 and 1.54% on the NSE to ₹258.23.
The Nifty FMCG index surged 1.16% to 46,561.10, recovering from a 3.52% decline over the past four consecutive trading sessions. As reported by Business Standard, ITC led gains with a 3.50% increase, followed by Emami up 2.77%, Marico rising 2.07%, Varun Beverages gaining 1.87%, Dabur India up 1.13%, Hindustan Unilever advancing 1.09%, United Breweries up 0.99%, Patanjali Foods rising 0.35%, and Godrej Consumer Products gaining 0.01%. On the downside, Nestle India fell 3.15%, Colgate-Palmolive (India) dropped 2.60%, and Britannia Industries declined 1.24%.
Steel Strips Wheels surged 11.72% after reporting its second consecutive record monthly turnover in August 2026, with net turnover rising 53.6% to ₹592.92 crore during the month from ₹385.98 crore recorded in August 2025. As reported by Business Standard, Jindal Worldwide jumped 10.51% after its electric vehicle arm Jindal Mobilitric announced plans to expand its retail network to approximately 100 showrooms across India by the end of FY28. GAIL also remained positive, increasing 1.17% on the BSE to ₹173.00 and 0.71% on the NSE to ₹172.32, while Borosil Renewables edged up 0.26% on the BSE to ₹503.90.
