Pine Labs shares experienced a sharp 20% decline to ₹151 on May 13, 2023, as the six-month lock-in period for pre-IPO investors ended. According to Live Mint, the lock-in period expiry made 92.4 crore equity shares, representing nearly 80% of the company's outstanding equity, eligible for trading in the secondary market. A lock-in period restricts certain shareholders, including promoters and pre-IPO investors, from selling their shares in the open market during a predetermined timeframe. However, as per Nuvama Institutional Equities, the lock-in expiry does not imply that all these shares will be offloaded immediately - it simply means these shares can now be traded by the shareholders. The end of the lock-in period typically leads to increased selling pressure as early investors look to capitalize on their investments.
The stock has declined 31.6% from its IPO price of ₹221, reflecting continued weakness since the company's public listing in November 2025. As reported by Live Mint, the IPO, which opened in November, witnessed lacklustre investor interest with the issue being subscribed 2.48 times overall. The stock had previously closed at ₹188.01 apiece on Tuesday before Wednesday's decline, and according to Nuvama Institutional Equities, the said number of shares that will free up for trade today is worth more than ₹17,372 crore at that price level. Wednesday's drop marked the steepest single-day fall since the stock's market debut, pushing it to its lowest level in over a month. The large volume of shares available for trading contributed to the sharp decline in share price, with broader market sentiments and investor confidence also affected by recent economic indicators.
Despite the market pressure, Pine Labs demonstrated robust financial performance in Q3 FY26. The company's operating revenue grew 23% year-on-year to ₹744 crore in Q3 FY26, compared with ₹601 crore in the year-ago period, as per the latest financial results. Meanwhile, expenses grew at a slower pace of 13% to ₹704 crore, compared with ₹622 crore last year. This performance indicates the company's ability to scale operations efficiently while maintaining profitability metrics.
Despite the market pressure, Pine Labs announced the acquisition of Shopflo for ₹88 crore last week, combining payments infrastructure with checkout solutions. According to the company's statement, Shopflo currently serves around 1,000 e-commerce merchants and the acquisition is expected to enable online merchants to improve conversion rates in addition to payment collection. As per the last reported figures, Pine Labs' revenue from its payments business grew 50% in the December quarter driven by strong activity across sectors including hospitality, diagnostics, and fitness.
The decline in Pine Labs shares could have a ripple effect on investor sentiment in the Indian stock market, particularly among technology and fintech sectors. The Nifty and Sensex indices may also experience volatility as investors reassess their positions in response to this significant drop. For investors holding Pine Labs shares, it may be prudent to evaluate whether to hold or sell based on individual risk tolerance and market conditions. SIP investors should continue their contributions, as market fluctuations are part of long-term investing. Investors should remain vigilant and consider their investment strategies carefully, with the recent crash indicating potential volatility in the market.
