India's financial markets have achieved a historic milestone with listed market capitalisation crossing ₹460 lakh crore, surpassing the combined credit and balance sheet of the entire Indian banking system. According to The Hindu BusinessLine, this achievement comes as National Stock Exchange (NSE) CEO Ashish Kumar Chauhan issued urgent warnings about AI-driven cyber threats and quantum computing risks at the Association of NSE Members of India's (ANMI) 16th Annual Capital Market Convention in Mumbai. The exchange now reaches more than 99% of India's PIN codes with over 37 crore registered investor accounts and 13.6 crore unique individual investors.
Chauhan highlighted recent international incidents that underscore the urgency of cybersecurity measures, noting that financial institutions in Japan and the United States have recently come under AI-driven cyber attacks. As reported by The Hindu BusinessLine, Japan declared a national emergency over cyber hacking two weeks ago, while American banks reported AI-based agentic attacks on their infrastructure last week. The exchange is conducting a comprehensive review of every network component for vulnerabilities, with Chauhan emphasizing that cybersecurity risks could affect the integrity of the broader market network if individual members fail to address vulnerabilities.
Beyond AI threats, Chauhan warned of emerging risks from quantum computing that could compromise current cryptographic frameworks, including SSL protocols. According to The Hindu BusinessLine, he cautioned that "Technology is like riding a tiger, it's comfortable while you ride, but when you get down, it eats you up." The exchange is working with industry bodies and the regulator to help the ecosystem navigate these evolving challenges, with Chauhan urging ANMI to establish a dedicated task force to help member brokers build cyber resilience.
Individual investors have emerged as a significant force in Indian markets, with their holdings growing from ₹7.9 lakh crore in March 2014 to ₹90.3 lakh crore as of June 2026, representing an annualised growth rate of 31% since April 2020. As reported by The Hindu BusinessLine, Maharashtra leads all states with over two crore unique registered investors. The exchange has expanded beyond equities into equity derivatives, currency, commodities, electricity derivatives, and Electronic Gold Receipts, with Corporate Bond Index Futures receiving basic regulatory approval. In FY26, NSE conducted over 17,800 investor awareness programmes, reaching 9.3 lakh participants.
Financial markets have responded significantly to growing cybersecurity concerns, with cybersecurity stocks surging this week amid the PHP vulnerability disclosure. According to Investing.com, notable gains include Palo Alto Networks (NASDAQ:PANW) and CrowdStrike (NASDAQ:CRWD) up 11%, Cloudflare (NYSE:NET) up 9%, and Okta (NASDAQ:OKTA) up 14%. The rally reflects expectations that rising cyber risks will encourage businesses and governments to invest more heavily in security infrastructure, potentially driving increased spending on network protection, identity management, and AI-powered security products designed to detect and contain attacks.
