New India Assurance shares experienced a sharp reversal on Tuesday, falling as low as 3.22% to ₹181 after gaining nearly 16% in the last five days. According to Essential Business Intelligence, the stock had surged 14.28% to ₹185.39 on Monday, extending gains for a second consecutive session as trading volumes picked up sharply. The reversal comes after the stock's dramatic rise from ₹162.23 on October 12 to ₹187.02, representing a 15.28% single-day gain on delivery volume of 40 lakh shares, more than seven times its five-day average. The stock has now rebounded sharply after a period of weakness, demonstrating strong momentum in the general insurance sector before the latest decline.
Trading activity in the stock increased substantially on Monday, with the NSE data showing traded volume of 530 lakh shares around 1:10 p.m., while the traded value stood at ₹957 crore. As reported by Essential Business Intelligence, the stock's free-float market capitalisation was ₹4,421.9 crore, against a total market capitalisation of ₹30,430.3 crore. The surge in volumes accompanied the sharp price rise, making trading activity a key metric to track as the stock extends its recovery. The movement comes amid broader market weakness, with the Nifty 50 down around 0.62% over the same period. The stock pared most of its losses to trade 0.8% lower at ₹185.54 as of 11:41 a.m. on Tuesday, as against a 0.70% advance in the Nifty index.
Market expert Harshal Dasani, Business Head at INVAsset PMS, explained the decline and advised traders to examine Monday's movement for understanding the current price action. According to Essential Business Intelligence, Dasani noted that the stock rose 15.28% on October 12 from ₹162.23 to ₹187.02 on delivery volume of 40 lakh shares, after falling 16% over the prior month. He highlighted that New India sold 1.05 crore NSE shares in the September offer for sale at ₹1,785, generating roughly ₹1,874 crore of proceeds against a cost of ₹0.32 a share. Dasani stated that because this sale is realised, the gain goes through the profit and loss account in the September quarter, due by mid-November. The June quarter was a standalone loss of ₹257 crore, and with the government holding about 85% and the float thin, the market buys the headline swing violently.
From a technical perspective, SBI Securities Head of Technical and Derivatives Research Sudeep Shah noted that New India Assurance witnessed a sharp pullback of nearly 15% on October 12. As reported by Essential Business Intelligence, Shah stated that the broader price structure remains range-bound, with the stock consolidating within the 243–156 range since late June 2026. The ADX has remained largely flat, indicating a lack of trend strength. A decisive breakout on either side of this range will provide further directional cues for the stock's future movement.
