Market breadth has deteriorated in recent months, but stress remains well below the levels seen in March. According to Yes Securities, 14 percent of stocks in the Nifty Total Market universe are now trading within 5 percent of their 52-week lows, compared to 40 percent during the March selloff. The brokerage noted that the relatively contained breadth deterioration suggests the current correction is unlikely to turn into another broad-based selloff, although any recovery is likely to be gradual and uneven. Recent trading sessions have seen benchmarks hit fresh intraday lows, with the Nifty trading below the 23,350 level as continuous foreign fund outflows and geopolitical concerns weighed on sentiment.
The benchmark indices tumbled further and hit fresh intraday lows in afternoon trade, with the S&P BSE Sensex declining 302.06 points or 0.40% to 74,556.93 and the Nifty 50 falling 82.10 points or 0.35% to 23,332.20 as of 13:25 IST. Market breadth was almost even, with 2,064 shares rising and 2,136 shares falling on the BSE, while 245 shares remained unchanged. In the broader market, the BSE 150 MidCap Index traded flat while the BSE 250 SmallCap Index shed 0.20%. The gradual deterioration has been evident, with the share of stocks trading within 5 percent of their 52-week lows climbing from 2 percent in April to around 14 percent in September.
Among the top gainers, Coal India led with a 3.15% rise, followed by Dr Reddy's Lab up 1.03%, Titan Company gaining 0.99%, Eternal rising 0.94%, and Indigo advancing 0.66%. On the losing side, Trent declined 1.80%, Cipla fell 1.43%, Bajaj Finance dropped 1.42%, SBI declined 1.34%, and Infosys fell 1.31%. RailTel Corporation of India added 0.98% after announcing receipt of a ₹14.09 crore work order from Uttar Pradesh University Of Medical Sciences. Symbiotec Pharmalab fell 2.15% despite reporting a 7% rise in revenue to ₹218.2 crore in Q1 FY27, as the company's consolidated net profit dropped 52.8% to ₹14.1 crore.
The weakness is concentrated in domestic-facing sectors, particularly power, construction materials, FMCG and construction, where a relatively large share of stocks is close to their 52-week lows. According to Yes Securities, metals and mining and healthcare sectors have relatively few stocks near their lows and are showing better near-term price resilience. The sectoral divergence suggests the current market weakness is being driven by sector-specific factors rather than broad economic conditions. Puravankara added 0.70% after announcing entry into the Delhi-NCR real estate market with 13.44-acre land parcel in Greater Noida having saleable potential of 4.57 million square feet and estimated gross development value of approximately ₹5,200 crore.
Technical analysis reveals that the Nifty 50 faces potential downside risk with key supports at 22,600-22,500 and resistance in the 23,250-23,300 range. A decisive break below 22,000 would negate the bullish view, potentially targeting 21,700 and 21,200 on the downside. However, the Sensex maintains support at 73,400 with resistance at 74,600-74,800, while the Nifty Bank index holds immediate support at 55,175. Foreign Portfolio Investors (FPIs) snapped their three-week selling spree with net inflows of $402 million last week, providing some support for potential recovery. The Nifty Midcap 150 faces crucial support at 22,100-22,000 with resistance at 22,500-23,000, while the Nifty Smallcap 250 holds support at 18,000 with potential downside to 17,800-17,500.
