The advance-decline ratio across the BSE500 index stood at 1.21x, with 267 stocks advancing against 221 declining, indicating modestly positive breadth despite headline indices closing lower.
Eternal Ltd emerged as the top performer with a 1.84% gain to close at ₹252.21, recording the highest percentage increase among major stocks. According to reports from ET Now, Hindalco Industries Ltd followed with a 1.40% rise to ₹1,115.00, while Oil & Natural Gas Corpn Ltd gained 1.26% to ₹288.55. Coal India Ltd advanced 1.24% to ₹463.70, and Infosys Ltd rose 0.98% to ₹1,180.00. State Bank of India and ICICI Bank Ltd also posted gains of 0.84% and 0.65% respectively. In the latest trading session, Adani Enterprises Ltd surged 3.18% to close at ₹2,940.2, while Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles Ltd advanced 3.05% to ₹384.65 and Coal India Ltd increased 1.62% to ₹465.4.
The Information Technology (IT) sector emerged as the top gainer, rising 0.55%, buoyed by select large-cap IT stocks showing resilience amid global tech demand optimism. According to latest market data, Info Edge (India) was the top gainer among large caps, advancing 1.26%, while Apollo Hospitals Enterprise Ltd retreated 1.82% to ₹8,251. Titan Company Ltd slipped 1.23% to ₹4,108.2 and Kotak Mahindra Bank Ltd declined 1.22% to ₹388.05. Among the BSE500 stocks, Blue Jet Health led the gainers with a robust 5.65% rise, followed by Ather Energy at 4.90% and Campus Activewear up 4.01%. These stocks benefited from sector-specific tailwinds and positive investor interest, while Techno Electric & Engineering plunged 11.85%, Poly Medicure declined 6.49%, and Container Corporation fell 4.74%, reflecting profit booking and sector-specific concerns.
The Consumer Durables sector was the biggest laggard, falling 0.60%, pressured by profit booking and subdued demand outlook. The S&P BSE 250 Smallcap index rose 0.19%, and the S&P BSE 150 Midcap index inched up 0.01%, while the BSE 100 large-cap index declined 0.14%. The BSE 150 Midcap index showed relative strength compared to large caps, which traded largely flat. The Sensex's ability to hold above the 50-day moving average (DMA) offers some near-term support, but the fact that the 50DMA remains below the 200DMA suggests that the broader trend is still under pressure. Investors should watch for a decisive move above the 200DMA to confirm a sustained uptrend.
