BSE's Sensex derivatives platform has demonstrated remarkable growth since its relaunch in May 2023, with options notional average daily turnover (ADTV) surging from ₹0.016 lakh crore to ₹268.3 lakh crore by April 2026. According to exchange data viewed by The Hindu BusinessLine, premium turnover also expanded dramatically from ₹2.1 crore to more than ₹33,000 crore during the same period. The exchange has witnessed steady improvement in turnover, open interest and participant activity since the relaunch with revised product specifications.
Sundararaman Ramamurthy, managing director and CEO of BSE, attributes the contract's transformation from a near-dormant product to one of the world's most actively traded options offerings to strategic product design changes. The exchange initially introduced Friday expiry contracts, later shifted to Tuesday under SEBI's single-expiry framework and eventually moved expiry to Thursday to align with market preferences. As Ramamurthy explained in an email interview, "Thursday works best in terms of expiry for market participants, benefiting our overall derivatives strategy and helping diversify expiry days across exchanges." This strategic approach has been instrumental in earning strong market acceptance and driving the contract's growth trajectory.
Individual investors now contribute roughly 30 per cent of the total trading volumes in Sensex derivative contracts, reflecting rising retail engagement in the segment. The exchange has seen broad-based growth with strong participation from all stakeholders including retail and institutional investors. Institutional participation has also steadily improved over the past three years, helping deepen liquidity alongside improvements in technology infrastructure and product depth. Foreign portfolio investors trading these contracts currently stand at over 500, up from about 100 a year ago, while strong participation from high-frequency traders has further enhanced market liquidity.
BSE has received regulatory approvals for three new monthly index derivatives — BSE Focused IT, Focused MidCap, and Sensex Next 30. The BSE Focused IT index has already been launched and has received an encouraging response from market participants. The exchange continues to focus on identifying and addressing critical product gaps, maintaining an optimal lot size suited to market participants and introducing differentiated expiry days. Weekly expiries have contributed to higher participation and liquidity in the derivatives segment, while the exchange is working on developing new monthly products and deepening liquidity in monthly contracts of existing products.
The exchange continues to work closely with market regulator SEBI on investor awareness, risk disclosures and market education initiatives aimed at promoting sustainable participation in derivatives trading. As Ramamurthy emphasized, "Investor protection and market development are not contradictory objectives. They must go hand in hand for markets to remain sustainable over the long term." The exchange downplayed concerns around the impact of tighter regulatory norms in the derivatives market, emphasizing that investor protection and market development should be viewed as complementary objectives. With India's capital markets remaining underpenetrated relative to the size of the economy, BSE continues to see strong long-term potential for sustainable growth in the derivatives ecosystem.
