
Both BSE and NSE have declared a stock market holiday on Thursday, 28 May 2026, for Bakri Id. According to reports from Livemint, this week will be a holiday-shortened period as both major bourses will remain shut for trading on this day. The Equity Segment, Equity Derivative Segment, Currency Derivatives Segments & NDS-RST and Tri Party Repo segments will be closed for trading on Thursday, May 28, as per the BSE and NSE holiday calendars. As per the National Stock Exchange of India (NSE) holiday calendar, trading will remain suspended on Thursday, May 28, on account of Bakri Eid. The Ministry of Personnel, Public Grievances & Pensions confirmed that all central government administrative offices located in Delhi/New Delhi shall remain closed on May 28, 2026, on account of Id-ul-Zuha (Bakrid) (in place of 27th May, 2026).
The stock market will remain closed for three days this week (May 25 to 31), including one weekday public holiday and regular weekend closures on Saturdays and Sundays. According to the NSE holiday calendar, domestic equity markets will also observe regular weekend holidays on May 30 and May 31. Equity, derivatives, currency derivatives, securities lending and borrowing (SLB), and electronic gold receipts (EGR) segments will remain closed on these days. As per the latest NSE holiday calendar for CY2026, a total of 16 market holidays are scheduled, while four holidays fall on Saturdays or Sundays. After May, Indian stock markets will remain closed on seven more occasions in 2026, apart from regular weekend holidays.
MCX trading will remain closed for the morning session on Thursday, May 28. According to the MCX holiday calendar, as reported by Livemint, the trading in commodities on May 28 will be closed during the morning session, which is from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM. However, commodity trading will open in the evening session, from 5:00 PM to 11:30/11:55 PM.
Domestic equity benchmarks Sensex and Nifty 50 extended gains to fresh highs in afternoon trade on Friday, May 22, after the Indian Rupee recovered to ₹95 per US dollar mark earlier in the session. As reported by NDTV Profit, the NSE Nifty 50 rose up to 0.76% to 23,835.65 after a flat opening, while BSE Sensex advanced 624 points, or 0.8%, to 75,807.65. As many as 33 of Nifty's 50 stocks are trading in the green, with financial stocks largely leading the rally as Nifty Financial Services emerged as the top-performing sectoral index and Bank Nifty achieved the second top spot. In the latest trading session on Monday, May 25, the 30-share BSE SENSEX jumped 908.98 points to 76,317.85 in early trade, while NSE's NIFTY50 surged 262.65 points to 23,977.70. From the 30-SENSEX firms, Mahindra & Mahindra, HDFC Bank, Bajaj Finance, Bajaj Finserv, Larsen & Toubro, and InterGlobe Aviation were among the biggest winners, while Tata Consultancy Services and Sun Pharma were the laggards.
The upcoming market holidays include September 14: Ganesh Chaturthi (Monday), October 2: Mahatma Gandhi Jayanti (Friday), November 10: Diwali Balipratipada (Tuesday), and November 24: Prakash Gurpurb Sri Guru Nanak Dev (Tuesday). Several major festivals, including Mahashivratri, Id-Ul-Fitr, Independence Day, and Diwali Laxmi Pujan, fall on weekends in 2026. Although Diwali Laxmi Pujan falls on a Sunday this year, both the NSE and BSE will hold a special 'Muhurat Trading' session on November 8. The special trading window marks the traditional start of a new financial year for many investors, with exact timings to be announced separately by the exchanges.
