Tether has partnered with Fasset, a digital bank and investment platform, to introduce the world's first Visa debit card backed by digital gold XAU₮. According to the latest announcement, this innovative card allows users to convert XAU₮ to USD₮ and then to fiat currency for purchases at Visa merchants globally. The card offers up to 6% XAU₮ cashback on eligible transactions and automatically converts remaining balances into XAU₮, facilitating passive gold accumulation. Tether will contribute up to $1 million equivalent in XAU₮ to the card's rewards pool, significantly enhancing the earning potential for users. The card operates on the Visa network and is integrated with Fasset's wallet infrastructure, enabling users to spend through a conversion path from XAU₮ to USD₮ and then to fiat at the point of transaction.
The card includes an automatic round-up feature that invests spare change from transactions into XAU₮, turning routine spending into small recurring purchases of tokenized gold. As reported by Tether, rewards are credited to users' wallets in real time, providing immediate value for gold accumulation. This feature addresses the challenge of tokenized gold being treated primarily as an investment or store-of-value product rather than a tool for everyday payments. The card's design embeds XAU₮ into a familiar consumer experience while still relying on fiat settlement at the merchant level, bridging traditional payments with asset-backed digital tokens. Through seamless integration with Fasset wallets, cardholders receive real-time rewards in XAU₮ and can easily manage their digital assets.
According to the latest announcement, the market capitalization of tokenized digital gold is above $5.3 billion, with XAU₮ accounting for more than $2.6 billion of that total. Fasset brings comprehensive customer-facing infrastructure including multi-currency accounts, fast transfers, instant settlement, a global debit card, and access to investments across crypto, stocks, funds, and commodities. As reported by The Block, Fasset operates as one of the largest digital asset off-ramp providers across Asia and Africa, supporting the conversion between USDT and fiat. The launch represents a significant advancement in the acceptance and use of gold-backed digital assets, leveraging familiar payment experiences to demystify digital currencies and make them more accessible. The partnership enables Tether, the world's largest stablecoin issuer with its U.S. dollar-pegged USDT, to expand its gold-backed token offerings into real-world payment systems.
As reported by The Block, Tether CEO Paolo Ardoino stated that through this initiative, the company is connecting stablecoins and tokenized gold to real-world payment systems, making them usable, accessible, and seamlessly integrated into global transactions. The CEO emphasized that "historically, gold has been a store of value, not a medium of exchange. This initiative changes that narrative." According to DeFiLlama data, Tether's market capitalization stands near $187.8 billion, reflecting the company's expanding presence beyond its main USD₮ stablecoin business. Fasset CEO Mohammad Raafi Hossain noted that "for over a thousand years, gold has been the most trusted store of wealth across our markets. We're bringing it into the digital age." The launch matters because tokenized gold has largely been treated as an investment or store-of-value product rather than a tool for everyday payments, with the card potentially serving as a bridge between traditional payments and asset-backed digital tokens.
