Sui (SUI) token surged 25% in 24 hours to push above $1.10 after breaking out of its months-long trading range between $0.85 and $1.05. According to the latest reports, this represents a significant technical breakthrough that looks different from previous failed breakout attempts. The token has now reached a four-month high of $1.41, marking a substantial recovery from recent lows and demonstrating renewed institutional confidence in the Sui network's prospects.
A key catalyst for the rally was Nasdaq-listed SUI Group Holdings' decision to stake its entire treasury of 108.7 million SUI tokens worth approximately $143 million directly on the network. As reported by crypto.news, this move effectively removed nearly 2.7% of the circulating SUI supply from the open market, creating a significant supply squeeze that bolstered the token's price. However, the token supply challenges remain significant as only 40% of SUI's fixed 10 billion supply is circulating, with the rest sitting in reserves, staking subsidies, team vesting, and investor allocations. The high staking participation rate of 65-75% of circulating supply helps lock tokens, but the fully diluted valuation near $9 billion still hangs over price action.
Adding to the optimism, Mysten Labs co-founder Adeniyi Abiodun revealed that confidential transactions for private payments and fee-free stablecoin transfers will launch on the Sui network later this year. According to crypto.news, these features would offer users unprecedented privacy and cost efficiency. The network has demonstrated strong real activity, with the chain processing $1 trillion in stablecoin volume since August according to Mysten Labs. Institutional infrastructure is rapidly expanding with CME futures launching May 4, which will bring institutional access without forcing funds to custody actual tokens. SUI has already received SEC approval for a spot ETP earlier this year, Grayscale filed an S-1 for a Sui Trust, and Nasdaq listed a 2x leveraged SUI ETF (TXXS).
The price surge triggered roughly $3.13 million in liquidations from exchange traders, with nearly 90% coming from short positions. As reported by crypto.news, this forced short sellers to buy back the token, pushing SUI prices even higher in a classic short squeeze scenario. The liquidations amplified the rally as market dynamics shifted in favor of long positions, reinforcing the bullish momentum that drove the token to its four-month high.
For SUI's breakout to be sustainable, the token needs to hold above $1.05 as prior attempts failed when it couldn't clear that resistance cleanly. The timing of the staking announcement and CME futures launch provides additional catalysts for institutional flows. However, Bitcoin's performance remains crucial for altcoin momentum, as altcoins like SUI can pump 25% on news but collapse just as fast when BTC weakens. The current macro backdrop supports both Bitcoin and altcoins, with Iran tensions cooling, Fed potentially easing, and ETF demand remaining steady, creating favorable conditions for continued institutional interest in the Sui ecosystem.
